ALBERT JAMES DARLING

John  Gallicchio

Jim Darling was, one good guy. I knew him, from Boot Camp and our paths crossed, many times, after that. He was quiet and friendly, with a good attitude and a great heart. Everyone was known, by their last name, in the Marines, but he called me, by my first name. I saw, a lot of heros, that day, in Quang Nam, but Jim’s act of unselfish heroism, exceeded anything, I had ever seen, or ever will again. He purposely exposed himself, to extremely heavy fire, in order, to maneuver and defend, his fellow Marines. He showed courage, beyond any expectation and he truly, distinguished himself. His family, should be very proud. It’s been 40, years now, but the memory, of that day, is clear.

A message to friends of my friend
First it was "Jimmy" and a week later it was John Pfeiffer. Both Marines were killed within a week and our school was stunned. One year later Jerry Sweet from New Lebanon was KIA and i'll never forget the stunned feeling when all this occured so fast in such a small town. Jimmy was another trackster and a good leader. He was strong but soft spoken and always treated us underclassmen with respect. His brother Mark was a friend and classmate of mine and to this day i suffer with survivor guilt over the loss of these brave Marines. I was proud to follow Jimmy, John and Jerry into the Corps and serve in Vietnam in their footsteps with the same job.0311.rifleman. February and March of '69 with Alpha 1-7 and one night was severely wounded and sent home. The hardest thing in my life was never knowing what to say to their families.I still don't know, but i'd like to try. I close by saying what an honor it is to be on line with these three heroes of mine. I look forward to the day i join them again. God bless you Jim, John and Jerry and all your families. Phil Young
