Fallen Heroes - Viet Nam War
http://www.peekskillhighalumni.net
The PHS Alumni page, contains a section "Fallen Heroes" in which we honor the casualties of World War 2, Korea and Viet Nam. The pages are dedicated to those gallant young men who made the ultimate sacrifice so that others could live on in freedom. They must never be forgotten. We seek any information about any of these departed friends - especially pictures or reminisces of their time in service or growing up in Peekskill. Thank you, Ron Abbey, Class, of 1940, webmaster

A TRUE, AMERICAN AND MARINE, HERO
Frank and I, along with two ther friends, enlisted, in the Marine Corpse, together, in 1966. We went, to Boot Camp together, at Paris Island, Platoon 2001. After Boot Camp, we were assigned, to seperate units. Our units, from 3RD, Marine, Division, got shipped, to Viet Nam, together, late 1967 and arrived, about one month, before the Janurary, 1968, TET., Offensive. After arriving in DaNang, we got seperated again. I did not hear from, or see, Frank again. I was informed, Frank was killed, when I was asked, to be his Escort home, for his funeral, by his parents. Within 24, hours, I was on my way, from Chu Lai, to Saigon and back, to the States. I was in Dover, Deleware, within 48, hours. Next day, I escorted, Frank's remains, to to Peekskill, NY., via train, for the Wake and Burial. Frank's, Wake and Funeral, was very devistating, on his Family. He was one, of two children and the only Son, of a fully disabled, WWII, Veteran. Although, I'am not certain, I think Frank, had the option of foregoing, combat duty, due to his father's, WWII, total disability and being, the only living son. Within 4, Days, after Frank's burial, I was back in Viet Nam, with my unit, to finish my tour, in Viet Nam. I was more fortunate, then Frank. With some luck, I made it thru, my 13, month, tour and an additional 7, months. Although shaken, by a very good friends death, I was very moved, that the Marine Corpse, would go, to the time and expense, for me to escort Frank home, to his final, resting place. The USMC., did take care, of its OWN. In closing, I want to say, that Frank was, a true HERO. He may have, had the opportunity, to skip combat duty, due, to his father's, WWII, disability, but chose, to do his part. He often said, "I DID NOT JOIN, THE MARINE CORP, TO BE A DESK JOCKEY, OR SUPPLY CLERK." A TRUE, MARINE AND AMERICAN HERO, in my book. He paid, the Ultimate Price, as did so many others, for a cause, that at the time, seemed JUST and WINNABLE, but was bungled, by American Polititions, who had little regard, for the lives, they were wasting on a War, they never intended to win. Finally, Frank's life and all the other soldiers, who died, or were maimed there, may not have been in vain, as was demonstrated, by the swift, DESERT STORM, victory. If that, swift victory and low casualty rate, was a direct result, of lessons learned, in Viet Nam, then I can finally, personally say, I, as a Viet Nam Vet., made a difference, although, it took twenty plus years, to show up. If Frank, were here today, I think, he would concur. Regards, Frank Blaumauer, USMC.
