Boot Camp Buddies
We went through boot camp, Platoon 396, Parris Island. Recently I was going through my graduation book and decided to find out how many of us made it. I went online and had gotten all the way to 'S' without a single KIA. Then I saw Simon's name. I'm from the Bronx, and he and I traveled together from Manhattan to Parris Island. In boot camp, he was a joyous young man. We weren't allowed to smile but he always looked like he was hiding a smile behind the serious face the drill instructors expected from us. I still have family in New York, and the next time I'm there, I will visit the grave of this fine man.

It was an honor and a privilege to serve with my friend and squad leader. I learned much from his leadership and friendship in such a short time. I held him as his life slipped away and I shed a tear that day for a man who really cared for his troops. Miss you Cpl. Simon.

I had the opportunity to visit The Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington DC. As I searched and, found the names of my friends, classmates, neighbors etched into the smooth, black face of the Wall, an extraordinary outpouring of emotion became so strong. I was so overwhelmed with sorrow and pain that I could not hold back the tears for those heroes and their families who lost so much. Though my visit to the Wall was a few years ago, I feel that I left a piece of my heart there. To honor those who died in the Vietnam War and to say thank youGǪI created a small tribute to those heroes. Please click on the link above to view memorial website.
