AMERICA....REMEMBER ME?

Barbara L. Milliman-Slaby

I did not run....I did not hide,
when called to serve
I answered with pride.
Who am I? Where am I?
Does anyone remember me?
Does anyone still care?
I became a prisoner of war,
beaten and abused....
for what I was fighting for.
Who am I? Where am I?
Does anyone remember me?
Does anyone still care?
I held on to the hope that I would be free,
I never thought that my country
would forget about me....

How would you feel if your country
abandoned you and left you behind....
in some foreign prison,
and denied that you still exist?
How would you feel if they told
your loved ones excuses and lies?
Imagine what it is like to struggle to survive
the torture and pain....
day after day for years.
Would you survive....
if your spirit was broken,
and your faith in God was disappearing
because all of your prayers were unanswered?

Who am I? Where am I?
Does anyone remember me?
Does anyone still care?
My heart aches for those of us
forgotten by our government....
our freedom denied,
by all the "politics" and lies.
Left alone for years in our dark hell....
our dirt covered faces streaked from tears
that were cried so long ago....
Our frail bodies broken over and over again,
as our memories slowly fade....

We are those listed as "Missing In Action"
Prisoners of a War fought so long ago....
We did not run....we did not hide,
when called to serve....
we answered with pride.
We are American soldiers,
and we want to come home....

* Written in dedication to those POW/MIA's who are still waiting to come home......a full accounting is demanded....we will settle for nothing less!
