Larry Trotter trotters@psln.com Grade school chum PO. Box 282 Quincy, CA 95971 USA I Remember Richard. Richard and I attended a small parochial grade school, Whittier Christian Elementay, in the late 50's and early 60's. A bit eccentric, Richard had always insisted he wanted to become a "Prussian Soldier". We all found this quite amusing and insisted that the age of warfare had long passed. Idealists, we were. Idle talk in a world poised on the brink of a"police action" in a country none of us had even heard of but, Richard would not be swayed. He new early on that his personal destiny was to serve his beloved country in a way that none of us kids could ever dream. He willingly gave his life for a cause in which he believed. Few of us would ever have our own beliefs tested to the breaking point. Richard met the challenge. I don't know if anyone else will remember him.I'm sure his family is gone now.but someone must remember each face, each name on that cold, black wall, lest we as a nation, a people free, forget the ultimate price others have paid. I remember Richard.and I pledge: before I die, old friend, I will visit you at The Wall. Goodbye, Richard. Please forgive any harm I may have caused you. You will not be forgotten. With love, the fat kid with glasses, Larry. Tuesday, January 12, 1999 |
