Silver Star  Citation
Silver Star Awarded for actions during the Vietnam War The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Russell P. Miller (MCSN: 2322957), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Rifleman with Company D, Battalion Landing Team 1/3, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in Tinh Quang Nam Province, Republic of Vietnam on 10 May 1967. During Operation BEAVER CAGE, Private First Class Miller's squad was providing flank security for his platoon when they were taken under devastating automatic weapons, small-arms and mortar fire from an estimated two companies of Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Regulars. With complete disregard for his own personal safety, he repeatedly exposed himself to the deadly enemy fire to place effective fire upon the enemy positions. Again, with complete disregard for his own safety, he and a fellow Marine assaulted the entrenched enemy positions. Although mortally wounded during this valiant attempt, he was instrumental in gaining time to evacuate the wounded and allowing his platoon to establish defensive positions. By his bold initiative, gallant fighting spirit and loyal devotion to duty, Private First Class Miller reflected great credit upon himself and the Marine Corps and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country. Action Date: May 10, 1967 Service: Marine Corps Rank: Private First Class Company: Company D Battalion: Battalion Landing Team 1/3 Division: 3d Marine Division (Rein.), FMF

I have thought about Butch many times over the years, he was a 'one of a king' person. The world lost a great person in combat. He was my hero too.

You are always in my thoughts..Wish you were here..
Butch lived down the street from me on Chippewa St. and I could always here him coming to my house on his bike, as he was singing the Marine's hymn. My mom taught him to dance in our livingroom and he always thanked her for that. Butch taught me to dive at the pool at Potowatomee and to shoot baskets. Jr. High is a tough time for kids, but he made mine so much easier by just being with me. How I would have liked to grow old with him so we could have shared our lives, kids and grandkids. He would have turned 60 this year on August 8th, I turned 60 on Sept 6th. He is always in my heart!!

Thank-you
His sacrifice was made long before we ever met and yet I miss him as though we had known each other for decades. We owe our lives to all the Russell's in the world that go into battle, whether they pay the supreme sacrifice or we are fortunate enough to have them return - not everyone has learned this Great lesson of Freedom - and won't until someone they know is listed on a memorial. My deepest Gratitude to all of those who have, are and will serve for MY freedom!
