Lt Neuss, SIR, It has been about 45 1/2 years ago that you met your fate on Operation Medina, Quang Tri Province Vietnam. You were in the CP Group, when the NVA OVER-RAN 2nd Platoon's perimeter, at approx 0400 hours. The NVA moved a machine gun to a high ground across and adjacent to where the CP Group was at, and fired relentlessly into into your area. The Captain and numerous others in the CP Group were HIT, and you attempted to knock the machine gun out, which you could have, but you also lost your life, that morning too. Our FO Lt Brooks, said you were Posthumously Promoted from 1st Lt to CAPTAIN and Awarded the SILVER STAR for your Actions that morning. You were One of the HEROS, that TUFF Day. The Company sustained 7-KIA's and 18-WIA's from being Over-Ran. The BULLETS were Close to me that morning too. Another Tuff Day, in Vietnam, I will never forget. Being as TALL as you were, I heard 6'8', I will never forget seeing you stand, shade your eyes, and LOOK for the VC/NVA at times. Hope you have Rested in Peace all these years, and Thank You for your Sacrifice. I was one of your 60mm Mortar guys. Semper Fidelis SIR! Don B C/1/3 67-68. (I am the Web master at www.onethreemarines.com , and we have information there about Our Battalion with some History of Vietnam there. Also, there is a list of the MEN who served in Charlie Company in case you might know or looking for a Marine from C/1/3. Know WE in C/1/3, DO REMEMBER Our Brothers on this WALL! Semper Fidelis and RIP My Brother!)

My X.O. A fine Marine Officer
Yesterday, was the 11 Oct 2010. On 11 Oct. 1967 Charlie Company, 1st Bn, 3rd Marines lost an outstanding Marine Officer. He was my X.O. and we all enjoyed being around him, especially when the going got rough. He died on Combat Operation 'Medina in the early morning of the 11th. That day, we and the United States Marine Corps lost a true Hero. May his sole rest in peace. Semper Fi- Sgt Avalos 1st Platoon 'C' 1/3.

It's hard to believe it has been 43 years. If you search this we site for Marine casualties on this date you will find 8 other deaths in Quang Tri Province. They all died with LT Neuss. For many of them it was their first night. What a tragic waste. Unfortunately freedom isn't free. May they all rest in peace

One of the nicest people I ever met.
I remember him as a nice person. He never made fun of people. He always helped. We were classmates. I remember the winter time on the lake. We would all skate till all hours, get frozen feet and noses.
