Curt  Bruce cbruce9289@ao.com He had been my Platoon Sergeant Thanks, Marine! SSgt Owen had been my platoon sergeant in Camp Pendleton for two years before we went to Vietnam. I became the XO of B Co. shortly after we arrived. During our time together at Camp Pendleton in 3/5 he was my platoon sergeant in the 106 platoon and then in 3d platoon of Kilo Co. That was my first assignment out of The Basic School and he helped me learn how to be a Marine officer. He was a fine man, always ready with a smile and a joke, and a persuasive leader for his Marines. I was the Bn. Intelligence Officer during the battle when he was killed and to this day feel guilt because I wasn't with him. He, however, had one of the best platoon commanders in the Corps, Lt. Bill Wilson, who won a Navy Cross that day. If Bill couldn't have kept SSgt Owen alive, no one could.

Curt Bruce Nov 13, 2008 |
