Roy  Spencer Vietnam Veteran-Air Force Pilot Jolly Green Giant Heroes On January 28, 1970 an F105F was shot down. Both crewmen ejected successfully. A Jolly Green rescue helicopter was immediately dispatched to pick up the two downed airmen. When the aircraft was about 50 miles northwest of the location of the F105 crash site, it was hit by a MIG and exploded. The helicopter was flown by pilot Major Holly G. Bell, and carried crewmen Capt. Leonard C. Leeser, SMSgt. William D. Pruett SSgt. William C. Shinn MSgt. William C. Sutton and passenger Sgt. Gregory L. Anderson. A short beeper signal was heard from the helicopter, indicating that at least one person aboard may have exited the aircraft, however all six aboard were listed as Killed/Body Not Recovered. Jo  Beth sweetheart53196@live.com Texas I am sending this to all American soldiers who fought in Vietnam that lost their lives on January 28, 1970... my date of birth. When I was a little girl, I had always thought I was reincarnated from an American soldier who lost their life during a battle in Vietnam. I haven't thought about this in many years until most recently during the 10th anniversary of 9-11. Regardless of whether there is such a thing as reincarnation, I do hope the life I lead of providing supports to and advocating for people with disabilities makes a dent in showing appreciation for your ultimate sacrifice. Staff Sergeant Shinn, there are no adequate words to thank you for the opportunity you have given me, my son, family, and all Americans. I hope I don't let you down. My sincerest gratitude.

Joy Campbell McKenzie jjj_mck@yahoo.com Cousin Remembering a quiet cousin. What I remember most about Bill was his quiet, unassuming manner. Our extended family is large (our grandfathers were brothers with 7 other siblings) and we would all get together at least two times a year first on New Year's Eve and then in June for the family picnic. Bill always kept the older generation company and then talked with the little kids. We boasted of his achieving the coveted rank of Eagle Scout more than he did I think he was the first Rominger to receive the honor. I remember when I heard his helicopter went down in 1970 ironically, on the first day of his second tour of duty in Vietnam. That was just like him, though.doing what he felt he needed to do. When the travelling "Wall" came to our area, we made several trips out to it and made a rubbing for his mother. She passed away a couple of months ago.but I know she always hoped that Bill's body would have been found and returned to California. Bless all of you who served in Vietnam and especially those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Wednesday, March 29, 2000 |

RICHARD DUNCAN rdcf2@yahoo.com COUSIN 744 CLEAVAND STREET WOODLAND, CALIF. 95695 USA WHY WE FOUGHT MY COUSIN BILL AND I GREW UP TOGETHER IN WOODLAND. WE HUNTED AND FISHED IN THE CAPAY VALLEY FROM A VERY YOUNG AGE. HE LOVED BASEBALL AND BIRD HUNTING. THROUGH OUR YEARS TOGETER WE SHARED MANY GOOD TIMES. WE FELT IT OUR DUTY AS AMERICANS TO SERVE OUR COUNTRY AND BOTH ENLISTED AS SOON AS WE WERE OF AGE. BILL BEING A YEAR OLDER ENLISTED IN THE AIR FORCE AND MYSELF IN THE MARINE CORPS. WE WERE BOTH HOME ON LEAVE AT THE SAME TIME. HE WAS HOME FROM HIS FIRST TOUR MYSELF FROM INFANTRY TRAINING. I STEPPED OUTSIDE ONE DAY AT A FAMILY GATHERING TO FIND BILL STARING AT THE MOUNTAINS ON THE HORIZON. WE TALKED AND HE TOLD ME HE WAS GOING BACK FOR A SECOND TOUR OF DUTY. I ASKED HIM WHY AND HE SIMPLY SAID BECAUSE THEY NEED ME THERE. HE WAS A BRAVE AND SELFLESS MAN AND I MISS HIM EVERY DAY. SEMPER FI BILL. Wednesday, April 13, 2005 |
