CLYDE WILLIAM CAMPBELL

Roy  Spencer
Vietnam Veteran-Air Force Pilot
A-1J Skyraider Hero
1Lt. Clyde W. Campbell was the pilot of a J-model Spad on an operational mission over Laos on March 1, 1969. His precise role on that day is unclear. The mission took him in northern Xiangkhoang Province near the city of Na Khang, on the northern edge of the Plain of Jars region. FAC (Forward Air Control) in Laos was conducted by RAVENS, who were volunteers clandestinely stationed in Laos to support anti-communist efforts in that country. These unconventional pilots were among the best the Air Force had to offer, and saw more combat flying during a tour than any other single group. FACs worked closely with the A-1J for close in air support. At a point about 10 miles west of Na Khang, Campbell's aircraft was shot down. Others in the area reported that Campbell was dead, and the Air Force listed him Killed in Action. His remains were eventually returned for the hero's burial that he deserved.

Captain Campbell, I just read this morning that you were found and will be returning home after all this time. I hope that your return will give some comfort to those you left behind. May God be with them. Thank you for your sacrifice.

For those who still wonder

I'm not sure if anyone still visits this page, and I will be reaching out via e-mail to those that are listed on here. It means so much to my family that Clyde is still remembered. He was my grandfather's brother. I know that not a day goes by that he is not thought of. In case anyone has not heard, I understand it did not make very much news other than the Longview area, but Clyde Campbell's remains were finally found and set to rest in Longview. We are so glad to have him home. I would be happy to pass any words to the family or answer any questions. I am just sorry that I did not get the chance to know him.

You are not forgotten nor ever shall you be. I remember you working at your dad’s store The Midget Market. Mr. Bob your dad was good to us kids but put up with no nonsense and when we grew to be men he treated us like men and friends. You were there often always friendly and smiling. I can still see you behind the counter giving me my change smiling very friendly and saying “thank you”. I took my son there for candy and Mr. Bob always kept a big selection. My son called it “The Big Candy Store”. The old building is still there and every time I see it I see you behind that counter smiling. I’m sorry that you didn’t get to come home like many of us did but you are not forgotten.

Little Willie...It's been 54 years since we met. I remember your parent's home on Richardson in Longview, the woods across the street where we took our 22's, the Midget Market, your folks, Bob and Jean and your big brother Bob. I remember the day you got that Opel as your first car and how jealous I was. I remember the day we lost you and I remember you every day since. You are often in my thoughts. We will again be together. It won't be long. Rest well.

I learned about the wall in a college history class. I knew about it before but only now was I prompted to search it out on the internet. I searched for someone from Texas who lost their life on the day that I was born and I found you. Thank you for your sacrifice. I will not forget you!
