Katie Smith "My Hero"
I am saddened after hearing of the recent passing of Richard's mom and my adopted mom Katie Smith. Not only mine, but the adopted mom of hundreds of soldiers of B/2/7 in Vietnam. Katie sent thousands of cookies and other items plus thousands of encouraging words to war-weary soldiers. Some referred to her as our "cookie mom", but to me she was much more than a "baker". She was a lady who could turn your sad days into bearable days. Although small in stature, she was a GIANT in the eyes of me and the other boys who knew her. She is now reaping her rewards in Heaven for the things she done for "her boys" in Vietnam. Our loss is Heavens gain. GOD BLESS YOU KATIE SMITH.

I remember
Our dead brothers still live for us and bid us think of life, not death-of life to which in their youth they lent the passion and joy of the spring. As I listen, the great chorus of life and joy begins again and amid the awful orchestra of seen and unseen powers and destinies of good and evil our trumpets sound once more a note of daring, hope and will. I see them now as once I saw them on this earth. They are the same bright figures that come also before your eyes and when I speak of those who were my brothers, the same words describe yours. RICHARD AND I WORKED TOGETHER AS MANAGERS AT A JACK-IN-THE-BOX IN THE CITY OF EAGLE ROCK AS YOUNG MEN IN CALIFORNIA. WE BOTH ENTERED THE SERVICE TOGETHER, WENT THROUGH BASIC TRAINING TOGETHER. WENT OUR SEPARATE WAYS AFTER BASIC AND NEVER SAW HIM AGAIN. I WENT TO VIETNAM IN 66 AS DID HE. I SERVED TWO TOURS, HE WAS LOST AFTER ONLY TWO MONTHS IN COUNTRY. I AM STILL A REGULAR VISITOR TO HIS BURIAL SITE @ FORREST LAWN GLENDALE EVERY MEMORIAL DAY AND VETRANS DAY. I HAVE MISSED MY FRIEND FOR THE PAST 33 YEARS.

You are not Forgotten
I remember having a sales class with Richard where he sold his new family car. I met with him after high school and gave him a ride home from Jack-in-the-box. I visited the wall and made a etching, he is not forgotten.

Dad and I miss you still and always will. God Bless. You were special to me more than you ever knew. All my memories were of milk and cookies in the middle of the night. I remember cruising in your 57 Chevy. Your little sis, Jackie
