Fellow Marine
John, I just finished the Marine Corps, Marathon, 26, Oct., 2008, in your Honor. I put your picture and name, on the back of my shirt and ran, the best I could, that day. I saw, many others running in memory, of other Marines. I had the humble privilege, of shaking, the young Marine Officers' hands, at the finish and thanked them, for their service - I can't believe we too, were, that young once. I'm sending the shirt to your daughter, who contacted me, this year - I simply can't explain, what that meant, for me - And yes, while in the quiet of my hotel room, after the race - I heard you, my friend...Thank you - and God Bless.

My Son's Godfather & My Best Friend
John was, a young Cpl. and I, a Sgt., when we met in Pensacola, FL., at Corry Field. We became the best of friends, became handball champions together (he, taught me well) and he was the Godfather of my 4th, son, Maurice Yann Brown, now a retired GySgt.. You are constantly with us, John. I still remember our last meeting, in Danang, in May 1968. You were getting ready to go on R&R, to Hawaii, to see, your wife and your new daughter. Semper Fi, friend!

Friends since birth
La Crescenta CA 91214 USA
Our mothers, were best friends and so, John, you, and I became friends from as far back as I can remember. Probably since birth. I remember when you were in a car accident, after a high school prom. We were so grateful that you survived. You could have escaped the military draft, if you had wanted, but it was your choice to serve our country. You were so very proud to become a Marine. I remember the scary stories you told us of boot camp. I thought about those as my oldest son left home, to go to boot camp and become a Marine. I remember the very last time I saw you. You came to visit us in California, on your way to Hawaii, for R & R and to meet with your wife and your new baby daughter. You were such a very proud and happy father and couldn't wait to get there to be with them. You told us about OCS and other experience with such excitement. You told us you'd be going to Vietnam after Hawaii. Your every word expressed how much being able to serve the United States meant to you. Your words were filled with pride. You must have been an awesome Marine, because you were an amazing young man. I know how much love you had for your family. And then came that day in 1969, when we received the devastating news of your death. "No, not John!" You had so much to live for. You were so very young. I think about you often. Rest in peace, my dear friend. Until we meet again.

A Fellow Veteran
Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free.
I'm following the path God laid for me.
I took his hand when I heard Him call.
I turned my back and left it all.
I could not stay that day,
to laugh, to love, to work or play.
Task undone must stay that way.
I found peace at the close of the day.
If my parting left a void,
then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss
Ah, these things I too will miss.
Be not burdened with time of sorrow.
I wish for you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life's been full, I savored much
Good friends, good times, a loved one touched.
Perhaps my time seemed all to brief,
but don't lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your hearts and share with me.
God wanted me now, He set me free!"

Remember
John - As always, you remain in my thoughts. I've told people about you hundreds of times over the past 40 years because the memory of a young, proud Marine remains so strong in my mind. I finished the Rock N Roll Marathon two weeks ago - the finish line is at MRCD San Diego. As I stood on the parade deck, I thought of you; and all the proud Marines that have entered heaven's gates since we were stationed together....sometimes it's just overwhelming - God Bless you and your family.
