Tom Metsker was killed in action in the Ia Drang Valley, in November 1965. He had been wounded and was aboard a helicopter leaving the LZ when he saw stretcher bearers bringing gravely wounded Capt. Ray LeFebvre. Tom got out to help load Ray onto the Huey and while doing that was shot and mortally wounded. He fell forward into the chopper and was DOA at Pleiku airstrip. He was a graduate of the Citadel and a damn fine soldier, officer and friend. God rest him, and all our buddies.

A Fallen Hero, May you never be forgotten
Capt. Metsker, you are my hero. You gave your life so another could live. After seeing the movie and reading the book, your sacrifice is more than any man could have asked . As I have for other Viet Nam Vets, I thank you and welcome home. May god bless your family for such a devastating loss. Rest in Peace!

Dear sir,I saw the movie "We were soldiers" just tonight.Even though It was a graphic movie,It will never do justice to the horrors that you and others saw or what must have been going through your minds as you and thousands of other good men just like you saw as you bled to death for another man,s freedom. There is a poem,I,m not sure of the title,But it goes something like this:"All of us went to Gettysburg, some of us didn,t come back and if you weren,t there, you,ll never understand."All I can do is say Thank you for giving your life to protect MY Freedom.

REFLECTIONS FROM THE MOVING WALL". I am a monument to a black period in this countries history.I am the Vietnam wall.,composed to two angled granite walls, inscribed with the names of fifty eight thousand, one hundred thirty four American men and women who died in hell (that was Vietnam) Many people come to see me. strangely they come mostly in silence-old people, young people, children, mothers, fathers, widows, and veterans.all for reasons of their own.they bring gifts, pictures, letters, flowers, poems and cigarettes.the letters speak of grief and loneliness and regret.they ask forgiveness.they are an out pouring of pain.the people softly touch names on my face.they water my grass with tears.then they leave in silence and I hope in peace.for I am more than two stone walls.I am a thank you from a nation that forgot.I am a long past due apology.I am healing for wounds too long left untended.I am a tribute paid to fallen warriors.I AM THE VIETNAM WALL. "America has forgotten the wars.will she remember her warriors"? You may be gone , BUT YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN.

It has been noted that 234 young Americans died fighting around LZ X-RAY & Albany. In reality, there were 304 Americans KIA in the Pleiku campaign (Ia Drang Valley). These 304 Americans are listed in the book "We were soldiers once.and young". To Capt. Thomas C. Metsker,(one of the 304 KIA), I want to express my deepesr gratitude for YOUR service & sacrifice to our great country. Rest in peace.
