Peace and condolence, to the family and friends. "He which hath no stomach to this fight let him depart. But we in it shall be remembered. We few, we happy few, we band of brothers!! For he today, that sheds his blood with me, shall always be my brother”. Rest in peace brave soldier, you have not been forgotten. (W.Shakespeare) May God Bless You for your Sacrifice!!!

In Tribute to SSgt Gerard Paul Porta, with So Much Gratitude for his Courage and his Years of Service and Dedication to our Country and for Freedom. Rest well and know that you will NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. I am the sister of such a young hero, who also made the Supreme Sacrifice in Vietnam 1967....."NOR SHALL YOUR GLORY BE FORGOT, WHILE FAME HER RECORD KEEPS, OR HONOR POINTS TO THE HALLOWED SPOT, WHERE VALOR PROUDLY SLEEPS" ~ Theodore O'Hara ~

2131 Big Thompson Av.
Estes Park, Co. 80517 S/Sgt. Porta was platoon sergeant of 1st. platoon, Lima Co., 3rd Batt., 26th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. On the day he was fatally wounded he was acting platoon leader because the lieutenant had been seriously wounded several weeks before. Sgt. Porta lived for several minutes after being wounded. He continued to shout orders and directions to his men, trying to extricate the platoon from a very bad situation. His last words were calm and quiet and he died with a prayer on his lips. I was with him. He was the best Marine I ever knew.

S/Sgt. Porta, I just found out about your death this Veteran's Day 2004 from another former D.I. from San Diego, MCRD. I was one of your many recruits and you certainly scared the hell out of me. You helped to shape me though and I survived Vietnam. Like any other of your "recruits" I can still hear your specific "cadance call" (more like a song) when you had us out on the "grinder". I also remember that big stick you carried on the rifle range and called it "Luke the Gook!" You also had a real "pirate laugh" that gave us the shudders.but you filled our veins with a "brotherhood" and a "bond" I shall never forget. I am sure you saved many lives before you sacrificed yours for your platoon. God love ya and Semper Fi S/Sgt. Porta!
