I read about Him, in a Medal, of Honor, Citation
po., box, 993, New Rochelle, ny., 10805, USA
Honerable Action
I have not, Been to Vietnam, Im only 16, This man, Though, i never met, him and only read about him, i think was the most courages man, probably to ever live. He won, the medal, of Honor, by leaving the saftey his fox hole, to help an unconcious fellow Marine. In doing so, an enemy, tossed a grendade at his fellow Marine. PFC., Austin, instantly threw himself, upon the grenade and absorbed the impact, but it, doesnt end there. After The explostion, that he endured, he was still alive and saw, that an enemy solder was aiming his gun, at his fellow Marine and PFC., jumped, in the way and Bit the bullet, for his friend. we all owe our freedom, to MEN like this.

Thank God, for Oscar. I don't know from experience, but I imagine, a short friendship in Vietnam, makes you lifetime friends, even, if only one, of you survives. Many, of the good things, about my dad come, from knowing Oscar. I really wish, I could have, met him. God bless. Rebecca Payne

I read about your incredible acts of bravery in the book "Vietnam Medal of Honor Winners." Your selfless courage to protect your fellow Marines regardless of the "consequences" is an inspiration to all. It's an honor and priviledge for me to pay this small tribute to you. God Bless you Oscar Austin. Semper fi brave Marine.

The real heros, are still there
I just started, to work on board, the USS., Oscar Austin, (DDG., 79) a ship named, after Oscar. Untill then, I had never, heard of him, before. The ship's website, has a page, dedicated, to him and it's there, that I learned, of his sacrifice and courage. I thank God, for people like Oscar, who are willing to do, what so few are willing, or able, to do. I'm also grateful, to our Navy, for naming ships, after our nation's, heros. We'll run out, of people to fight, before we run out, of names, to use. I guess, that's a nice problem, to have.

I went, to high scool, with Oscar. I knew, that he had, died, in Vietnam, but never, looked him up, on the wall, until today. Some, of my students, are working, on a project, on the Vietnam, Memorial. I looked up, Jerry Dees who, I also knew, from school and then, I looked up, Oscar. It was startling to see, a picture and a profile, of someone who you, knew had died, in Vietnam! What a big sacrifice, Oscar made! I didn't know, that he had, so many medals and honors. How many people, even, have a ship, named, after them?
