A Grateful Admirer
Leon, I met a friend of yours today. She, like many others, had such dreams about your life and what you would have become, a father, a husband, a near and dear friend. Oh how we have lost so much!!I am most grateful for you today as I look at my life and the trials I am put through as each day comes and goes. For you, have given me my freedom, my kids freedom, at such a great cost to all that has loved you. May we NEVER forget you. Rest Dear soldier, for you ARE home!!!

Jack: I went back to see you again today
I told you I would be back on another day
I talked to you as if you were there
It really is too emotional to bear
I miss you and all the good times we knew
I'm sorry that they could not continue
So, I said my silent prayer
That only you could hear
I'll hold all my memories so dear
Eventually I start to shed a tear
So, again I must be strong, because it is time to go
I'll say Bye for now and I will be back again just to let you know

The wall visit
Jack: I went to the wall today
I could hear you call me
I found you right away
I said a silent prayer that only you could hear
In my mind I wondered why
Why did you have to die?
I touched your name and I could hear you telling me not to question why
I can still hear your voice in my heart
You're telling me that there is no time nor place that can ever break us apart
I'm sorry that I could not stay
But I promise that I will be back to see you again on another day

Jack:
As I turned around
We had just graduated High School
As I turned around
You were my friend to see
As I turned around
You were called to fight
I turned again and you were gone
It will be 40 years ago that you were called away
It was time for you to go
It was time for me to stay
When I am called away
I hope that when I turn around again it will be
you I see
I hope that when you turn and look you will recognize me.

Jack (as we all called you)became a citizen and gave your life for a country you were not even born in. I am writing this because you were taken like too many, too soon. You were a good friend in school. You did not have the chance become that great scoccer player. You were so good at that game, but God had other plans. You will be 60 years old on September 1, 2006. A lifetime ago and in a war that was in a country I barely heard of. I often wonder what life would have given to you had you returned. I can only look back and wonder. It is so hard to believe that you will be 60. We never had any thoughts of life being cut so short at age 20. Happy 60! I know you have found peace because you, like so many had spent your time in hell! You will always be forever young and always in my heart. May God keep you ever close........madelyn

In going thru the list of names on the wall I came across Joaquim Vaz Rebelo. We lived in Newark, NJ and went to Wilson Avenue Grammar from which we both graduated and also went onto East Side High School in Newark. We always called him Jack. That was a life time ago. I also found another of our schoolmates on the wall. The 60's in this country were a turmoil. I can only say that when Joaquim (Jack) was taken from us on that fateful day, that he went straight to heaven, because he had spent his time in Hell!
