Bob has always been my inspiration. At an early age he possessed the leadership skills and abilities that lead to him towards becoming an officer. He cared deeply about his family and friends therefore, I know that he cared deeply about the men he was entrusted to lead in combat, because he treated them like his family.

Childhood Friend
Bob will forever be etched in my memory as a kind young man that could make the time to brighten the day of a 'kid' who looked up to him. I still remember the day he took us out for ice cream 42 years ago, I was only 11. He was a hero to me then as he is to us all now. I hope someday, someone special like Bob will make a lasting impression on my son, so that he too, may know a hero in his eyes. How could a man like this ever be forgotten?

A Soldier's Valentine
. We bring a heart to you today, that all our hearts fit into. Not more than a cyber-space filled with 'thanks', but tied up with scarlet ribbons of love. Thanks for your loyalty to our flag, the red.the white.and the blue. Thank you, for the gift you gave. That gift, was, all, of you. We love you brave soldier, someone's child, someone's brother, and friend. You live in so many hearts today, your life will never end. And as we recite the morning Pledge, from this day forward, and on, we'll stand taller, seeing your face in freedom's folds.seeing other faces too.Faces we'll reflect upon, Dear One, and so much, because of you.Written by Sharon A. Dendinger, and dedicated to the memory of 1Lt. Robert Scott Byrnes (Bob), on the 41 st. anniversary of his death in combat, February 9, 1968 Valentine's Day.Posted to this site along with tribute statements that were submitted by the Fourth Grade Students at Mt. Vernon Elementary, upon hearing the story of the Vietnam War, and listening to the book, entitled, The Wall, and hearing about the friendship that their teacher enjoyed with 1 Lt.Byrnes. This Valentine's Day was filled with loving thoughts for a man who served his country and gave his life in so doing. The spirit of his life burns brightly in the hearts of those who knew him, and he has touched the future by enkindling a flame in the hearts of students who will carry his heroic story with them.

I learned of Bob's death about 41 years ago. I was saddened deeply and shocked. I went to school with him and we were really good buddies. I have been to the wall in Washington, three times, and each time I go I get Bob's name off of it 38E-46, and keep it in my bible. It doesn't get any easier. My husband also served in Vietnam and fortunately and thanks to God, he returned. Bob was not as lucky. I hope all of you who went to Our Lady Assumpiation and La Sierra High school with him or just knew him will try to remember him. He died as a hero and should not be forgotten. God Bless your family Bob Byrnes. I know you are with them. Your friend class 1963 LSHS Donna (Lewis) Piacentine
