Terry Cordell was 2 years my senior at The Citadel. He made a special point of coming by and encouraging me during my plebe year after a cowardly and false attack on my character from off campus. He made a difference in my life. He has a special place in my heart. May your soul rest in peace, Terry Cordell.

Captain Cordell and my mother, Ann Raborn, were friends in high school, he a football star and she a cheerleader. Their senior year yearbook in 1953 shows them together in a number of photos. Captain Cordell's death in 1962 rocked our small town, Sanford. Mother kept the newspaper and other mementoes. Ironically, she died of illness suddenly three years later. I suppose I have always identified them as having that in common, dying too early in life. About 15 years ago, I met Captain Cordell's father, Denver. He was gracious enough to talk to me about his son. One thing that stood out to me: he said that Terry wanted to get into West Point very badly and was given a position as an alternate. Not wanting to wait, he applied to and was accepted at The Citadel where he received the Outstanding Cadet award from General Mark Clark. I still have mother's photo of the event.

Terry and I were friends, for only a short period, of time, in Friedberg, Germany. Once I met, Terry, I knew that he was, a person of great, character and a true friend. Although our friendship, was for a short period, of time, I will always remember him, in my thoughts and prayers. God bless you, Terry, for being the person, we all admired.

Captain, Terry Cordell, bravely gave, his life for his country, while defending a Special Forces, outpost, Buon Enao complex, (Camp detachment, A-334) on October 15, 1962. It is written, that Captain, Cordell was,, an outstanding officer, who had won, the loyalty of the Rhade, indeginous tribe. Despite the fact, that the area, around Camp A-334, had bedcome, a major Vietcong target, Captain, Cordell continued, to expand, the camp project. On October 15, 1962, the Vietcong launched, a massive assault, on the camp. Captain, Cordell flew, over the site, in a U.S.A., FT-28, in order, to direct fire support, for the camp. Captain, Cordell's aircraft, was shot down, by the Vietcong and exploded, on impact in full view, of his loyal Rhade troops. The Rhade troops, were so outraged, over the loss, of Captain, Cordell, that they counterattacked and succeffully, defeated the Vietcong.
