The young dead soldiers do not speak.
Nevertheless, they are heard in the still houses:
who has not heard them?
They have a silence that speaks for them at night
and when the clock counts.
They say: We were young. We have died.
Remember us.
They say: We have done what we could
but until it is finished it is not done.
They say: We have given our lives but until it is finished
no one can know what our lives gave.
They say: Our deaths are not ours: they are yours,
they will mean what you make them.
They say: Whether our lives and our deaths were for
peace and a new hope or for nothing we cannot say,
it is you who must say this.
We leave you our deaths. Give them their meaning.
We were young, they say. We have died remember us.

MAJ., H. L. SPURGEON (AUS., RETIRED)
HE WAS MY PLT GUIDE, FT. KNOX AIT.
ARMOR CREWMAN, C-4-1, FT. KNOX, 1969
WHILE OVER THERE, I HAD HEARD, FROM SOME OF OUR AIT., CLASS, THAT CROSBY HAD BEEN KIA., BY A MINE. ALONG, WITH A FEW OTHERS, THAT I'LL TRY AND LOOK INTO. AFTER 33, YRS., I FINALLY SEE, THAT IT'S TRUE, MAYBE. WHAT, WAS HE DOING, IN A LEG OUTFIT? I DON'T RECALL, THE 1ST, CAV. DIVISION, HAVING ANY TANKS! HE WAS 11E, JUST LIKE THE REST, OF US. 11B, WAS GRUNT. 11E, WAS ARMOR. (TANKS) I'LL ALWAYS REMEMBER HIM SQUINTING, THRU HIS CONTACT LENSES, HE RESEMBLED THE ACTOR, WHO PORTRAYED SUPERMAN. (REEVES?) I DON'T, RECALL HIM SMOKING, OR CUSSING, AT LEAST VERY MUCH. HE ALWAYS REMINDED ME, OF A CLEAN, CUT, DECENT MAN.
