Clare  Barkovic clarebarkovic@cox.net Widow 7250 Archlaw Drive Clifton VA 20124 USA Always a Soldier Bill was a 3 year veteran of the 82nd Airborne and a yearling at West Point when we were first introduced on Sunday, October 24, 1965. He was an exciting man and devoted soldier who look forward to returning to the Infantry and the 82nd Airborne upon graduation in June 1968. We were 'pinned' in March 1966 celebrated my birthday on November 11, 1966, Veterans Day, with a copy of 'The Army Wife' by Nancy Shea engaged in March 1967 and married four days after his graduation in June 1968. Bill (and I) returned to the
82nd at Fort Bragg, August 1968. We left together for Travis AFB and, his departure to Viet Nam, in May 1969. He was headed to the Big Red One however,he wrote a note on his records requesting '173 ABN Bde - please' - 'surprisingly enough, I came down on orders for the 173rd' I was at my high school friend's wedding on July 19,1969,when I was called home by my mother. An 'army car' was parked in front of our house two Officers were waiting and told me that Bill was killed in action on July 15th. My mother said I looked and acted as if I had received this news before I was a soldier's wife and I had been prepared. Bill received a Silver Star and Bronze Star for his bravery in battle and my memory that never forgets. Today's your 69th birthday I know that you are in heaven and know that I am well and happy. Ever so much. Feb 23, 2013
