Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth and danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings, Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds and done a hundred things. You have not dreamed of wheeled and soared and swung, high in the sunlit silence, hov'ring there, I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung my eager craft through footless halls of air. Up, up the long delirious, burning blue I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace, where never lark, or even eagle flew, and, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod the high untrespassed sanctity of space, put out my hand and touched the face of God. "Bill" Hearne, was my roommate, at Southern Cal. He was the best man, at my wedding, and he was my best friend. We, got our draft notices together. One day, I offered to tag along, with him because he wanted to visit the recruiting station. To "avoid the draft," I enlisted, in the Marine Corps, on the spot. He took a couple of weeks, to deliberate and enlisted in the Army. He finished high, in his helicopter mechanic school and got his choice, of subsequent duty station. He chose to fly, and went to a Warrant Officer program, and helicopter flight school. I got one last letter, from him in Vietnam, when I was in the Philippines, in which he said, he didn't want to rotate back to the world only to shine boots and stand inspections. He said, he loved, to "get in his chopper and bolt." He extended six months, so he could go inactive, when he got stateside. I never saw him again. I miss him to this day. I will never forget him.
