I served with LCPL Ray LaPointe
LCPL LaPointe and I served together in the Weapons Platoon, Kilo Company, Third Batallion, 26th Marine Regiment. Late in the afternoon on September 10, 1967, our Batallion was returning to our base camp on Hill 55 in Con Thien after a day-long search and destroy mission. Before our Batallion could return safely to our lines we were attacked by a very large force of NVA. Many of the Marines in our Batallion were killed because they were strung out in a long single file on open ground. Those of us who were in the lead had returned to our positions on Hill 55 when the attack began. LCPL LaPointe and the rest of his M60 Machine Gun team fought from a salient fox hole on the perimeter. I was near LCPL LaPointe's position, however I could not see him because thick brush lay between us. By nightfall his position was over-run by the NVA. Ray's M60 Machine Gun Team managed to halt the main NVA attack on Hill 55. Because of LCPL LaPointe's bravery, I and other members of my squad managed to regroup at the top of the hill where we fought throughout the rest of the night with support from Huey gun ships, Jets, Puff the Magic Dragon and artillery. The next mornig I had the sad duty of recovering the bodies of LCPL LaPointe and his fire team. LCPL Ray LaPointe is a true American Heroe.

During my visit to The Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington DC I searched and, found the names of my friends, classmates, neighbors etched into the smooth, black face of the Wall, an extraordinary outpouring of emotion became so strong. I was so overwhelmed with sorrow and pain that I could not hold back the tears for those heroes and their families who lost so much. Though my visit to the Wall was a few years ago, I feel that I left a piece of my heart there. To honor those who died in the Vietnam War and to say thank youŕI created a small tribute to those heroes. Please click on the link above to view memorial website.
