Drawing inspiration from a hero
I met Jim at Eglin AFB, FL, when I returned from Southeast Asia in 1971. In Southeast Asia, I had been assigned initially to the 37th ARRS in DaNang, then transferred to the 40th ARRS in Udorn, Thailand. From Eglin, I would be assigned to the 1550 ATTW at Hill AFB, UT, where, Jim would reappear in my life as a flight engineer trainee, headed for Southeast Asia. He and I would get together and talk. He appeared to be overcoming a shyness, an uncertainty about himself, that I think was all to obvious to those who had known him at Eglin. But he was not overcompensating for this, as we might say in my current profession of psychotherapist. He was growing he was committed he was unafraid. I have pictures of Jim and I in the mountains of Utah. Snow had fallen amid the Autumn foliage. He and I had driven up above Odgen, UT, in a white Corvette he had been loaned by an Air Force officer. Interestingly enough, I still have an attache case I bought for next for nothing from Jim when I left Eglin AFB for Utah, believing perhaps that I would never see him again. That briefcase still contains my Air Force files. I have read many times the sparse descriptions of Jim's loss and the loss of the others aboard his HH-53 over Cambodia. Nothing does justice to their heroism and the meaning they continue to provide to us who knew them and to us who served in an unpopular war where bravery was all the more pronounced because of its unpopluarity.
