Remembering a Friend
May God wrap you in the cloak of his love, Kenny, and forever keep you safe in heaven and out of harm's way. There is not a week that goes by that you do not pop into my memory and I pray for you regularly. Thank you so much for the ultimate sacrifice that you made for all in this country.

Honoring Your Memory Today On Your Birthday
Apr 3, 2009

William  Taylor
A Fellow Veteran
Unselfishly, you left your fathers and your mothers, You left behind your sisters and your brothers. Leaving your beloved children and wives, You put on hold your dreams, your lives. On foreign soil, you found yourself planted To fight for those whose freedom you granted. Without your sacrifice, their cause would be lost But you carried onward, no matter the cost. Many horrors you had endured and seen. Many faces had haunted your dreams. You cheered as your enemies littered the ground You cried as your brothers fell all around. When it was over, you all came back home, Some were left with memories to face all alone Some found themselves in the company of friends As their crosses cast shadows across the land. Those who survived were forever scarred Emotionally, physically, permanently marred. Those who did not, now sleep eternally Beneath the ground they had given their lives to keep us free. With a hand upon my heart, I feel The pride and respect my reverence is revealed In the tears that now stream down my upturned face As our flag waves above you, in her glory and grace. Freedom was the gift that you unselfishly gave Pain and death was the price that you ultimately paid. Every day, I give my utmost admiration To those who had fought to defend our nation. ~Author Unknown~

A Brave Paratrooper
Kenneth was a fine young man and a true Hero for his country. He was a paratrooper in D Co, 3rd Bn, 506th Abn Inf, 101st Abn Div. He died in the late evening hours of 17 Jan 1969. Our platoon was moving between rice paddies and tree lines when we were ambushed by Main Force VC. Kenneth was moving with his squad when a bullet fragment hit him in his back, piercing his heart. He yelled for his squad not to expose themselves to fire to get to him. While other paratroopers of the platoon suppressed the fire Kenneth was recovered. As he was being treated, he looked at us and said "I'm going to die, tell my family that I love them". A few minutes later he died. Kenneth Measell was a brave paratrooper and a Hero of this country who cared about his men and family. Respectfully, Mike Smith, D Co, 3rd Bn, 506th Abn Inf, 101st Abn Div.

Flags at half mast.

Kenneth William Measell was born April 3, 1948 and his home of record was Gaylord, Michigan. When he died in January of 1969, the Mayor of the town proclaimed January 24 - 31 as "Kenneth Measell Week" and requested that all flags in the town should be flown at half mast. Kenneth graduated from the Gaylord Community School in 1966 and he went to Vietnam in September of 1968. He served with 3-506th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division. He was a Currahee! In a letter home, he wrote: "I sincerely hope you will pray for me. I am truly afraid. Pray that God will help me to conquer my daily temptations and fears. I know I live in a world of danger - a world of dust and mud - a world of rockets and mortars. And trials come down upon me so suddenly, so swiftly." How he died is recounted in another post to this site. Another paragraph of the letter reads: "I didn't write this letter because I wanted anyone to feel sorry for me. I just want people to know what we're up against." Kenneth was survived by his parents: Mr. and Mrs. Edward Measell two brothers: Tom and Robert and by grandparents: David Measell and Mr. and Mrs. Darald Manter. Kenneth was buried at the Otsego Lake Township Cemetery Gaylord, Michigan Lot # 102 God rest your soul, Currahee! Anyone wishing to connect with Kenneth's unit, please go to the website mentioned above.
