To My Fellow MP
To Owen: It's Jim Burroughs, from way back in Saigon, 1968, with the 527th Military Police Company, 716th MP Battalion. You were the guy from MP School at Fort Gordon who showed up late for Vietnam because you took a slight 6 month detour on the DMZ in Korea. When I asked you to explain your sudden appearance in the Nam, you said, "Hell, I figured as long as I was going to be gotten shot at, I might as well be getting Combat Pay." Oh Owen, how I wish you hadn't been such a brave idiot. When you went on your patrol that fateful night of Jan 31, 1968, I had just gotten off my patrol, having driven all over Saigon in the evening until 2AM with a Viet MP. I had driven by the Embassy a few hours before you with not a hint of what was to become your fate. You see, the VC had chosen 3:30AM as zero hour. Any how, I still think often of you, and my MP mentor and your patrol partner Johnnie Thomas, and our friends Charles Daniel and Bill Sebast who guarded the Embassy gates that night. How I wish the four of you could have had the chance to reach your late 50's as the rest of us have. We still miss you and love you guys. Say hello up there to the guys for us. Jim
