Travis  Hanner thanner87@hotmail.com nephew 6012-1 Splendora Ln Jacksonville Florida 32219 United States Today, I had the pleasure of talking to a man who was there with Joey. His name is Ed. I don't have a last name, but I hope to talk to him again. He told me the story of the firefight, the battle that took Joey's life. They were pinned down for many hours, yet they never gave up. After hearing this, I now know of the last night Joey was with us. Thank you, Ed. I needed that talk, Thank you for helping him get out, and at least giving him a chance. I hope to talk to you again soon. Again, thank you for being there for Joey, and thank you for being a Marine. Semper Fi.

Travis  Hanner thanner87@hotmail.com nephew 2919 Carleon Rd Jacksonville FL 32218 usa My mother is Phyllis, Joey's sister. Being born in 69, I never had the pleasure of meeting him. My grandma always told me I was just like him. Wish I could have met him. Joey has been a hero of mine since my childhood. I hold no anger toward our government for sending him over, only pride and admiration for answering the call, and serving the country he loved. Thank you, Uncle Joey, for doing the right thing, for serving your country, for protecting all you held dear, for being a United States Marine. I hope to meet you one day. Until then, you will always be my hero. Mar 16, 2011 |

Sam  Hawkins sam.hawkins@mchsi.com friend I know your life
On earth was troubled
And only you could know the pain
You weren't afraid to face the devil
You were no stranger to the rain
Go rest high on that mountain
Son, you work on earth is done
Go to heaven a shoutin'
Love for the Father and Son
Oh, how we cried the day you left us
We gathered round your grave to grieve
I wish I could see the angels faces
When they hear your sweet voice sing
Go rest high on that mountain
Son, you work on earth is done
Go to heaven a shoutin'
Love for the Father and Son
Thanks for the memories Joey...I always visit your name on the wall when in DC. Jan 4, 2011 |

Judy  Nicks crazierstill1952@aol.com cousin 12751 Old Plank Road Jacksonville Fl 32220 USA Your Mother's Poem Joey, we love and miss you. Thank you for being my HERO!! This is a poem Aunt Edna wrote after you left us and I know she is there with you now. I don't know if Ricky, Debbie, or Phyllis have a copy of it, but in case they don't, I'd like to post it. The name of it was 'My Son'
There were no big headlines the day my son died
No ambulance to try for that life saving ride
There were no t.v. cameras or news men about
No senators cried that his life was snuffed out
There was no offer to take me to him so fast
There was no day of mourning, no flag at half mast
There were no speeches made, no honors received
No president cared how much we were grieved
There were no Nobel Prizes ever given to him
No marches were led, he wasn't one of them
There was no title in front of his name
He'll never be known in the world's hall of fame
But then his name wasn't martin luthur king
He died doing his duty as a U.S. Marine
Now you're going to hell Mr. President I fear
For causing the death of the one I hold dear
For his life and others you're gonna have to pay
For you gave the orders and they had to obey
Oh! he could have burned his draft card on your lawn
But he did his duty and now he is gone
He'll receive his rewards on Heavens fair shore
And he won't have to obey your orders any more
He's marching on streets that are made of pure gold
He answered God's call without ever being told
I pray God forgive me for feeling as I do
And also forgive me for having judged you
I also thank Him for this boy that we loved
Who's waiting for us in that home up above.
Edna Mae Benedict
(Mother of Joseph Wayne Benedict)
I love you, Joey

Fellow Marine Well done Marine, rest in peace The time, you won your town, the race, We chaired you, through the market-place, Man and boy, stood cheering by, And home, we brought you shoulder-high. To-day, the road all runners come, Shoulder-high we bring you home, And set you, at your threshold down, Townsman, of a stiller town. Smart lad, to slip betimes away, From fields, where glory does not stay. And early though, the laurel grows, It withers quicker, than the rose. Eyes, the shady night has shut, Cannot see the record cut. And silence, sounds, no worse than cheers, After earth has, stopped the ears: Now you, will not swell, the rout Of lads, that wore their honours out, Runners, whom renown outran And the name, died, before the man. So set, before it’s echoes fade, The fleet foot, on the sill of shade. And hold, to the low lintel up, The still-defended, challenge-cup. And round, that early-laurelled, head, Will flock, to gaze, the strengthless dead. And find unwithered, on it’s curls, The garland briefer, than a girl’s. A.E. Housman, "Don't be afraid, I've redeemed you. I've called your name. You're mine. Isaiah 43:1 (REN) Semper Fi! Jan 19, 2008 |

gene crabb gcrabb@sc.rr.com family friend neighbor and only person, i really knew, who became HERO Joey, Our grandparents, were next door neighbors. I rember one time, we all went fishing, near the bridge on Lem Turner Road. You had everyone, in the car singing a song, about soft drink, "Who been drinking all them diet-rites?" I also rember, you and I think Wayne Horton, getting in shape for the marines, jogging around the block. I know, you and Rick, were very proud, of your father and his service. I rember you, wanted to serve, as a marine, no questions asked. You made your family and neighbors proud of you. May 22, 2007 |
