He studied the tactics of the famous Generals of that war and soon decided that he wanted to become an Armor officer. In June of 1958 Charley achieved that quest and was appointed 2nd Lt US Army - Armor Corps. While in flight school at Ft. Rucker, Al, Charley married Judith Ann Flick of Valley Stream, NY. Ft. Rucker they went to Germany and in 1961 their daughter Jackie was born. Later he was reassigned to Ft. Stewart, Ga. There they had a son, Michael Justin. In 1966 Charley deployed to Viet Nam and was assigned to Troop A, 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division as an OH-13 helicopter pilot. On April 25,1967, while providing close covering fire for ground forces in heavy contact with the enemy, the armed helicopter which Charley was flying was shot down by enemy ground fire and exploded on contact. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his display of conspicuous valor on that day.
