We were both based in the Plei Ku area at the time, but at different locations. Arnie was famous in our class for always saying 'I can make it.' Unfortunately the weather had another idea. I was in the C.P. of the 4th I.D. 2nd Bd. that day when we heard he had gone down. It was so terribly frustrating to sit there fewer than 10 miles away and not be able to go search because the clouds were so thick and right down on the groundHe had just been to visit a few days before and told me of having been married in Hawaii.

To a fallen but not forgoten hero
Arnie married my sister just 10 days prior to his death. They were childhood sweethearts. The marriage took place while he was on R&R in Hawaii. Even though he was Army and I, a Marine, I brought him home and layed him to rest in Seattle.
