Silver Star  Citation Silver Star
Awarded for actions during the Vietnam War
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Daniel Clement Nichols (MCSN: 0-104295), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as the Assistant Executive Officer of Battery D, Second Battalion, Twelfth Marines, THIRD Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 17 February 1969, Battery D was occupying a position at Fire Support Base Cunningham in Quang Tri Province when the base came under an intense mortar attack followed by a fierce ground assault by a large North Vietnamese Army force which penetrated the friendly perimeter. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, First Lieutenant Nichols unhesitatingly left his position of relative safety and advanced across the fire-swept terrain to the point of heaviest contact. Undaunted by the enemy rounds impacting in the area, he moved from one position to another, distributing ammunition and encouraging his men as they encountered the advancing enemy. Continually braving hostile fire, First Lieutenant Nichols effectively slowed the hostile advance by repeatedly throwing hand grenades into the leading elements of the attack, and then rallying his men, he led them in an aggressive counterattack which turned the tide of battle and routed the hostile force. On one occasion, when his weapon malfunctioned, he recovered a discarded enemy rifle and continued to deliver fire against the retreating hostile force. By his courage, superb leadership and unwavering devotion to duty at great personal risk, First Lieutenant Nichols contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit's mission and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

Frank Heidl Slocum ditto@tctc.com High school Pal (Class of 1961WHS) 2196 North 200 West Crawfordsville,IN 47933 USA A Great Guy Danny was a warm and wonderful person. He and I spent an afternoon and evening at the "Jolly Trolley" in Westfield, what I believe to have been a few days before his departure. I was Air Force and had orders, too. It was a chance meeting. I don't know how far back Danny and I went, perhaps grade school at Wilson, but that day at the "Trolley" was special and lasting to this day. Danny was the proverbial all american boy and a the kind of person we all wanted to be. He was a treasure. Frank Heidl Slocum,Jr. Capt. USAF Feb 19,2000 Saturday, February 19, 2000

Terry McManus terrymcmanus@netscape.net Friend 70 Sunnyside london, On Canada I met Dutch when he became engaged to my next door neighbor. When I came back from a trip to Europe in the summer of 65, Dutch thought my hair was too long and so we sat on Rita's front porch while he gave me a haircut. He was a few year older than me and he was someone that you would instantly look up to a natural leader. My brother, (who also knew him), and I often talk about him and it is good to know that there are places where his name can be honored by the rememberances of those who had the privilege to know him.
