A special place in my heart
Mick and |I met in the fall of 1961 on the campus of Western Washington University in Bellingham and I fell for his winning smile and personality. We were friends and I have postcards he sent from Europe in 1962-63. He had a great time and I treasure them. For New Year's Eve 1963 he invited me to fly (my first flight) to Orcas to celebrate with his family in the cabin in Moran State Park where his father was the ranger and where Mick grew up. The festivities and friends remain fresh in my memories. We went our separate ways, but the laughter is in my heart. Last week, September 28, 2012, I visited his gravesite at the Olga Cemetery just down the road from where he grew up. Also, I climbed to the top of the tower on Mt. Constitution where he would have gone many times. I did it one more time for him. He lives on. My husband's name is John Michael and he is also an interesting Irishman. My maiden name is Waner.

May God bless your soul and be with your family and friends. Please know that I honor your bravery and will never forget the Supreme Sacrifice you gave to keep me and my fellow Americans free. I am from Bellingham and lost too many friends and classmates to the Vietnam war. As I get older, I realize the profound effect this war has had on me, and I promise to never forget you or the others that gave their all.

Peace and condolence, to the family and friends. "He which hath no stomach to this fight let him depart. But we in it shall be remembered. We few, we happy few, we band of brothers!! For he today, that sheds his blood with me, shall always be my brother.” Rest in peace brave soldier, you have not been forgotten. (W.Shakespeare) May God Bless You for your Sacrifice!!!

At a epoch in my life when I can take the time to look back at where I've been and whom I've known.remembering 'Mick' Odell
Only recently did I learn that his first name was 'John' because we all knew him as 'Mick.' I remember him very well from Officers Candidate School at Quantico. We came from everywhere and from every diverse background having one criteria for a common denominator we were all patriots who answered the call and went on to diverse fates. It was only last week that Col. Jack Wells (Ret.)of the 44th sent me a list of the casualties of the 44th, those heroes whose faces and voices we remember so well.Mick was a very affable and outgoing individual. I don't recall what we talked about but I remember his quick smile and easy going nature.a real nice guy, full of intelligence and enjoyment of the life that was cut so short by his response to the call of duty. It tore my heart out to learn that Mick was among the 44 of our membership who were killed, and only a few months from the time we parted company. It's now been 35 years since you made your sacrafice but I want to say that I remember your face and your voice just as it was then. And some of your old buddies will be making the tour in VN in August 2004, and will be taking your widow, Kathy, with us, as well as our memories of you. You were always faithful and your friends will be faithful to remember you. Semper Fi, Marine, until we are all collected together under the wing of God.
