JUST A FRIEND, FROM GROWING UP
I GREW UP IN MONTICELLO, AND BEING 10 MILES FROM ANAMOSA, I KNEW A LOT OF KIDS FROM ANAMOSA. I KNEW BILL VERY WELL. I REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME I LOOKED UP HIS NAME, IT BROUGHT TEARS TO MY EYES, AS HE WAS A GOOD FRIEND, AND SO YOUNG.I SAW THE MOVING WALL IN CEDAR RAPIDS, IA, LAST SUMMER AND I WAS DEEPLY TOUCH BY IT. MAY GOD BLESS

A Great President Lost
Bill was a classmate, one year ahead of me in high school. In 1964, we held a "mock" political convention in our auditorium to select presidential candidates. Bill stood up and provided an emotional and powerful speech promoting himself to be president. Bill would have made an excellent President of the United States and proved his worthiness in service to his country. We still miss and need your quick wit, Bill. Doug

Bill not a day goes by that I don't think of you and all of the rest of us in Echo Company. The talks we had in the Cp tent and your plans for the future. You were really on the ball and I really liked calling you a friend, even though I was a squid. When I was wounded and you came by the BAS that was the last time I saw you alive. We willbe joining you soon. "Doc.

I salute you, Bill
Bill, your untimely fate is something I never have quite accepted. Riding rapidly in your red Volkswagen, on our three-week adventure to Colorado in the summer of '65 was one of my fondest, lifetime memories. (And Colorado has never been the same since, I think.) We both had and shared so many wonderful dreams for our futures. But at summer's end, I returned to school, and you became a Marine. Eventually, I did follow you to fight in Vietnam, but by then it was far too late to save you. You - and so many of us - were cheated out of what would have surely been your wonderfully long life, your family, and given your talent, your certainly successful future. Tragically, you may not have lived beyond 20 but you have lived vividly, for nearly four more decades, in my memory. Like our riding together over the Nebraska plains toward Colorado in '65, I have always felt your spirit near to me in my many travels. Indeed, it has been quite a ride for us, old friend. May you rest in peace, Bill Rees . . and please put in a good word for me, when I finally arrive.
