JOHN JACKIE SMALLWOOD

Roy  Spencer
Vietnam Veteran-Air Force Pilot
F-4E Heroes
Capt Samuel B. Cornelius was the pilot of an F4E Phantom assigned a strike mission in Cambodia on June 16, 1973. His electronic weapons officer on the flight was Capt John J. Smallwood. Over the target area, the F4 was hit by hostile fire and crashed. No parachutes were seen, and no emergency beeper signals were heard indicating that the crew ejected safely. The official word was that their survival was unlikely. They were d Missing in Action (MIA).

We served together in the 58TFS
Jack and I served together at Udorn AFB in 1972. Jack was always quick with a smile and laugh. It was a sad day when we lost this hero and a fine person I was proud to call my friend. Rest in peace my friend and remember the good times we shared.

He served with honor.
I served with Capt. Jack Smallwood with the 33 tactical fighter wing. My job was to take care of all his flight gear (Life Support Specialist). I was a young enlisted Airman, we both talked about life and family so many times. Of all the souls that I have encountered over my 60 years of life, Capt. Jack Smallwood was indeed a real hero.

Simply the BEST
Jack 'KARST' Smallwood was not only a classmate of mine, but a very special person. I had the privilege of refueling Jack, and his Pilot Lt. Col. Phil Handley only a few minutes after their historic 'shooting down' of the Mig in June 1972. Jack's personality was only outshown by his courage and dedication to flying. A real example for younger generation today, and a true Southern Gentleman...
