THANK YOU
It has been 45 years since we left high school, but you have not been forgotten. I am grateful for your service to our country. You made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. I thank every veteran and soldier I see for their service. My Dad was a WWII veteran who served in the 3rd Armored Spearhead Division and I am so proud of that. I know your family is very proud of you.

Welcome home. High School Reunion this year (45th ).
You will be honored and missed.

December 1963, Christmas: From left to right, Marine Corps Pvt Ed Tufaga, Center; U.S. Army Pvt Thomas M. Wiley; Right, U.S. Army Pvt Thomas Joel Smith. Not sure of Ed’s lat name. His first name is Etuarti (Eddie). This was the last time we saw each other, December 1963.

There were 8 of us Thomas J. Smith, Thomas M. (Wood)Wiley, Etuarti Tufaga, Andy, Henry Tufaga, Dave Smith, Lala Tufaga, and a cousin of Eddie's. Tom, Ed, and I all graduated at the same time. Tom supplied the car, everyone else supplied the money for gas to spend Saturday, during the summer, going from one of Rhode Island to the other. Tom and his brother, Dave, and Ed were inseparable. Thomas J. had a heavy duty crush on Lala, Eddie's sister. Lala was the only one that did not have to provide gas money. Whenever she came on our little junkets, the seat next to Tom was her's. More than once we rode with 5 in the back seat that could only hold 4 comfortably. None of the others minded, and Thomas J. was in seventh heaven with Lala next to him.
Tom went in to the Army in July because I broke my right hand I was delayed by a month and a half Ed enlisted into the Marine Corps. Tom when to Helicopter Maintenance School, Ed went to Combat Engineer School for the Marines Me, I went Airborne and was assigned to the 82d Airborne Division.

CWO2 Thomas Joel Smith, you will be missed Brother.

Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth and danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings, Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds and done a hundred things. You have not dreamed of wheeled and soared and swung, high in the sunlit silence, hov'ring there, I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung my eager craft through footless halls of air. Up, up the long delirious, burning blue I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace, where never lark, or even eagle flew, and, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod the high untrespassed sanctity of space, put out my hand and touched the face of God.
