Michael Pineda mpineda303@cs.com served with him in 4th Infantry Div 2515 Glen Meadows Dr. Mesquite, TX 75150 I remember Doc Sperl I served in Co D 3/12th Infantry, 4th Infantry Division with Donald Sperl. Don didn't believe in killing, yet he served his country because he knew men would try to kill each other and would need to be tended to when wounded. While we carried weapons of destruction, he carried tools of healing (along with a shovel to help us dig fox holes with). We were all young, but Don seemed much younger. We were accidentally attacked by our own gunships while crossing a hill overlooking Dak To. Don was killed by what the Army called "friendly fire." We all cried that night when we found out he died. I only knew "Doc" Sperl for a short time, but it was long enough to realize that he was an honorable man and a true patriot. It has been 33 years since I last saw Don, but his image will always be with me. Thursday, May 24, 2001

T. J. Barrett, RADM, USCG tbarrett@cgalaska.uscg.mil admirer 3241 Foster Ave Juneau, AK 99801 U.S.A. Water-worn Stone Memorial Day 2000 in Juneau. Rain over years made the "l" in SPERL look to me like an "i" on your gravestone. When I said your name aloud, a voice corrected me. I looked and saw your family. I spoke with your dad and mom and learned how you served as a corpsman and saved lives what a great son you were, how proud they are of you and how you are still so very loved and so missed. Thank you for your service to our nation. I know it wasn't easy or fair. But like your family, I will never forget you or what you did. Tuesday, July 25, 2000
