Rest In Peace
I served in the Marines with Karl Taylor in Alpha Company 1st Battalion 6th Marines 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Vieques, PR and Gitmo Bay, Cuba from Oct. 1960 till Karl was transferred in Dec. 1961. I was surprised to hear of Karl's Death and the Medal of Honor. I also was deployed to Viet Nam in May 1965 and was lucky enough to have survived till I was transferred back to the USA in Oct. 1965. Rest In Peace, Karl

My Friend SSgt Karl Taylor
SSgt Taylor was my platoon sgt in Vietnam. I was Ssgt Taylors radio operator. We became good friends we were both married and our wives were named Shirley. We used to have long talks about our family's. I have never forgotten one nite we spent with each other on the side of a moutain outside of Danang. It was Oct 31,1968. It was so dark we could not see our hands in front of our faces. I remember Karl saying some day we will look back on this nite and laugh at what we had been through. On operation Meade River our Company Sgt had been kidded so they put Ssgt Taylor in his position and that is why we were not together on Dec 8. That morning we were told that we were going to be looking for some Marines that had been left behind from a previous fire fight two days earlier. That put our mortar platoon on the end of a sweep through a rice paddy. We located one of the Marines and I was radioing the info to the Company Commander when all hell broke loose. I was the first one to be shot. We were cut off from the rest of the company. Myself and eight of my platoon were unable to get out of the cross fire. Knowing Karl I am sure when he found out that his platoon was in trouble he did everything he could to get to us. I was the only one to make it back and that wasn't until the next day. I was shot eight times and lost my right leg but somehow God let me live. When I was home and heard about Karl getting the Medal of Honor I contacted his wife and sent her a picture I had of Ssgt Taylor with a handle bar mustache he had grown while in Vietnam. His wife had never seen him with that mustache. I am so PROUD to be able to call Ssgt Karl Taylor my friend. Semper Fi my friend Cpl Paul Graves USMC

I joined India Co 3/26 in August 68, we were stationed at Lang Co just over the mountain from Danang. Our CP was at the old train station and the Hwy 1 bridge at are door step. Being new I would hear about Khe Sanh and other battles from the short timers, but sargent Taylor was always low key. We moved to Danang and then came Meade River. Being a FO for 81's I moved to Mike Co just before the operation. I heared about his action over the radio, you have to be proud of your Marine as I am to have met him way back then. He is not forgotten.

I thank you for you boundless bravery and helping in the mission of giving us here in the U.S. freedom. No words can describe how grateful I am to you. We would not be a free country without they help of you and all the other people who fought along side with you in the Vietnam War. To the family, I would like to say that the healing is not over, but will get better everday now and in the future. Thank you for everything you have done for our country!

I knew S/Sgt. Taylor in 1965. In 1975 or so I found his name in Navy Times stating he had been awarded the Medal of Honor. Tonight I found him again in a book titled 'Voices of Courage' it is about the battle for Khe Sahn his picture is on page 68 along with two other Marines standing in front of a bunker. The picture was taken more than 40 years ago but I recognized him the instant I saw the picture. It's amazing how certain individuals are forever in the back of a persons mind. He is one man I will never forget.
