Lawrence  Newman silvermillennium@netscape.com Served with him in 1959 4394 S. Strong Box Road Gold Canyon AZ 85118 USA I recently found that FSGT Yabes fell in Vietnam and earned a Congressional Medal Of Honor, giving up his life in the process.
I knew SFC Yabes for a short time when I was a member of the Heavy Weapons Platoon, Company B, 1st Airborne Battle Group, 503rd Infantry, 82nd Airborned Division in early 1959, when he was our platoon sergeant.
He was always a professional soldier in my mind and commanded the respect of those under his direction.
Rest in peace FSGT Yabes and many thanks for your service. Jul 6, 2012 |

John  Lowe I was there the night 1SG Yabes was killed in action. I wrote one of the several recommendations for his Medal of Honor. I was a 'Newbie' W-1 pilot for the 1st Brigade Headquarters sent out to live in the field with Manchu Alpha as part of my in-country orientation. Although somewhat short in stature, 1SG Yabes was a giant of a First Sergeant.
We were an under-strength company securing an engineer platoon that was clearing brush from the road running north from OP Ann-Margaret on the north side of the division base camp at Cu Chi. All together - engineers and infantry - there were about 85 of us. The incoming mortars started about midnight then we were overrun by a battalion of VC/NVA. They were inside our perimeter for a couple of hours, it seemed. 1SG Yabes left the security of the command bunker to go help 2nd Platoon and did all the things listed in his MOH citation. Manchu Bravo, led by CPT 'Wattie' Smith, fought their way out to us from Cu Chi base arriving around 0400 I think. I lost all track of time. There is a firing range at Ft. Benning named in honor of 1SG Yabes. Feb 12, 2012 |

Your souls shall be where the heroes are and your memories shine like the morning star...Slumber well where the shells screamed and fell...The danger has passed, and now at last, go to sleep"...By ~ Sgt Joyce Kilmer ~ May 26, 2007 |

Rick Hand rickhand@efn.org Fellow Oregonian and Vietnam Vet 581 S. 53rd St. Springfield, OR True Oakridge Warrior. FSG Maximo Yabes was the kind of guy John Wayne lusted to be like. Who could possibly ask more from a first shirt? He looked after his "kids" like no other. The city of Oakridge, Oregon and the state Department of Transportation have erected a bust, a plaque and a flagpole in his honor. This is at a rest stop on the east edge of this small Cascade Mountains community. In my opinion they should have renamed the town after him. Thursday, March 30, 2000 |

Manuel Pino Jr Bco 2/8th 1st Cav 68-69 mpjr54@msn.com Fellow Army Vietnam Vet If I should die, and leave you here awhile, be not like others, sore undone, who keep long vigils by the silent dust, and weep.for MY sake, turn again to life, and smile.Nerving thy heart, and trembling hand to do something to comfort other hearts than thine. Complete these dear, unfinished tasks of mine.and I, perchance, may therein comfort you. Saturday, October 29, 2005 |

Jackie Taylor ~Grateful American~ You, Sir, Have Not Been Forgotten! http://www.geocities.com/rememberance004
During my visit to The Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington DC I searched and, found the names of my friends, classmates, neighbors etched into the smooth, black face of the Wall, an extraordinary outpouring of emotion became so strong. I was so overwhelmed with sorrow and pain that I could not hold back the tears for those heroes and their families who lost so much. Though my visit to the Wall was a few years ago, I feel that I left a piece of my heart there. To honor those who died in the Vietnam War and to say thank youŕI created a small tribute to those heroes. Please click on the link above to view memorial website. Monday, February 20, 2006 |
