Dian Chapman dian@mousetrax.com 'Little Sister' School correction for Donny's cousin
Just reading these notes again about Donny and realized his '3rd cousin' who was writing a report on Donny has some details wrong that I wanted to clarify for him and for future reference. Donny did NOT go to 'Schurz HS' (although I did). Donny went to Portage Park Grammar School and then moved on to Prossor Vocational H.S. He did not graduate. He quit school in his senior year because he had the strong desire to serve his country. Rather than finishing High School, he enlisted as a US MARINE. Hoorah! Was stationed in Japan, I believe and later sent to Nam, fighting in Operation Prairie in Oct/66, where he was hit and later died aboard USS Repose. A member of Kilo 3/7 Marines. Just wanted to clarify for his legacy. (smile) Feb 14, 2011 |

Dian Chapman (Fontaine) dian@mousetrax.com "Little Sister" Chicago Now I know, what happened to you, Donny! Well, Donny, after all these years, of wondering, what you went through, when you were killed, thanks, to the Internet, I'm now learning more, about what you, endured and how you died. I discovered, you were part, of Kilo, 3rd, Battalion, 7th, Marines and you were fighting, during Operation Prairie, trying, to keep hold, of the area, around the DMZ., when you guys, from 3/7, were hit, on Oct., 24, 1966, by 60mm, mortar fire. The "other guy," who I always envisioned, as stepping on a mine, when you were hit, was actually hit and killed, on the spot, while you suffered, severe head wounds. You were evacuated, to hospital ship, USS., Repose,... but as we knew, you died, about a week later, just before your 20th, birthday, from your injuries. I also now, know, that, that "other guy," was, Pfc., Robert Duane Weaver. I'll never forget, that last day, when you were, in the kitchen, telling me not to worry, but that you had, to go fight, so you, could keep me and mom safe! You'll be, in my heart, forever, Donny! (Thanks, to Vic Vilionis, 3/7, who helped me, learn what happened.) Oct 8, 2007 |
