Chris DeSpain chdespain@hotmail.com The older brother, I never had 210, Rolla G. Rd., State Rd., V., P.O., Box, 1030, Linn Creek, MO., 65052, USA The older brother, I never had H Monte. I was in my senior, year, of high school, when we got the news. I had the honor, of riding with your family, to the burial site. Cars were backed up, all the way, to the A&W. I guess most the town, showed up. Dan wanted, to quit school right then, and go to Nam, but your parents, in their wisdom and grief, wouldn't let him. I joined the Corps, after graduation and went over, for our revenge. I operated alot, with 1/3, 1/9 and was also in the same area, you were. I believe you were with me, then, protecting me as you always, protected everyone. I did get our revenge, but it didn't, bring you back. I visit you, every time I go back, to Coos Bay. My son brought your name, that was etched on the wall, many years ago. My wife did the same, after that. I've been there 3, times, but I just couldn't make myself walk it, the firt 2. Last summer I did and laid the flag, I had flown for you all these years at the base, of your panel. It was then I realized, you were not gone in spirit, as you comforted my emotions, yet, again. I left the wall with bursting pride, didn't say good bye, but said "Hello Monte," I finally made it! As you probably know, but some Brothers may not, Dan named his son Monte and just like you, he was a football star, for Marshfied High. I cherish, knowing you and your family. I will, never forget. Semper Fi, Brother. Chris DeSpain Mar 5, 2007 |

Antonio R. Ramos Royalbuch@msn.com Was in the battle, he was killed 234, E., 81, St., Apt., A, NY., NY., 10028, USA Remembered, after 38, years The water run ambush. Some, of us went, from Vietnan to Okinawa, to refurbish. With others, returned, to Vietnam as Battalion, Landing Team, (BLT-1/3) 1st., Batn., 3rd, Marine Regiment. (FMF) Our fleet ship, was the USS., Okinawa, a helicopter carrier, to do heliborne assaults, against the N., Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces. On the 28th, April 1967, we were helolifted, into the Que Son, Valley, (Quang Tin, Prov.) to sweep northwest, of the village. We humped for days, contact, with the enemy was increasing. On May 3, 1967, after a very hot day, of search, we called off the day. It was, Operation, Beaver Cage-Union. In need of drinking water, a water run was organized, out, of company "A," guys, who proceeded to pick up, everyone, else's canteens and hoisted, them on belts, to carry, as many as possible, to the creek. So many, that they were even told, not, to bring their weapons. We had made the mistake, of setting up, camp, in a flat area lower, than some nearby hills. Unknowingly, to us, the enemy was spying, from the higher ground. The water run, left and we kept digging, for the night. Shortly afterwards, heavy automatic and small, arms fire erupted. Since there had been, no prior scouting, the water run, was easily ambushed. Everybody was called, to commit and the battle lasted, until past midnight. Artillery and gunship fire was needed, to suppress the cunning enemy. 14, Marine brothers, were killed, that night including this hero. Some, of the bodies, we could not retrieve, until the next day. As Shore Party man, I loaded most of the bodies, into the choppers. 38, years later, I want to Memorialize all, of them and tell their loved ones, what happened. As for me, sometime later on the evening, of June 13, 1967, I lost part, of my right leg, to a booby trap, during the first day, of Operation Choctaw. God Bless you, all brothers. I still love and remember, you all. Semper Fi, Antonio R. Ramos. In Memoriam 1) Borawski, James D., 2) Button, Monty Duwanyne, 3) Carnline, Troy Monroe, 4) Dickerson, Tommy Eugene, 5) Falwell, Donald Wayne, 6) Gilbertson, Ricky Mark, 7) La Rose, Joseph Rhuben, 8) Murry Eugene Plesakov, 9) Luciano Paul Rose, 10) Robert James, 11) Spicer, Eugene Douglas, 12) Sweesy, John Earl, 13) Urick, John William, 14) Verbilla David.
