Captain Cheeseman was killed on 13 August 1970 (only two weeks short of returning home). He was an instructor pilot on a training mission directly related to supporting combat efforts in Southeast Asia. His CH-3 helicopter was struck by hostile ground or sniper fire and crashed 20 miles north of Ubon Airfield, Thailand. He was a member of the 21st Special Operations Squadron at the time. He had earned five Distinguished Flying Crosses, four Air Medals, and the Purple Heart. As a cadet, Cheeseman made the Dean’s List five semesters and served as an Element Leader. He ranked academically 64 out of a class of 470 upon graduation and overall he ranked 110 in his class. He entered the Academy as a National Merit Finalist and after leaving the Academy, he earned his MS in Applied Mathematics at North Carolina State University in 1966-7. Cheeseman was buried at the USAFA Cemetery and his name is on the USAFA War Memorial for his sacrifice for and dedication to this country. Also, a Little League baseball field in Pingree Park in Wenham, Massachusetts has been named Cheeseman field and dedicated to his memory.

Capt., Alan B Cheeseman, entered the US., Air Force, from Wenham, Massachsetts. (There is no Wenham, NJ.) Also, the crash occurred, over land. (Not over water) He was the recipient, of The Distinguished Flying Cross, with four, Oak, Leaf Clusters, The Air Medal, with five, Oak, Leaf Clusters and The Purple Heart.
