THEIR MAGNIFICENT COURAGE
. . Contributed By JAMES PATRICK CASEY On Tuesday, July 02, 2002
During the Winter/Spring of 1968, I had the privilege of commanding 3rd Platoon Charlie Company 3rd battalion 1st Infantry 11th Light Infantry Brigade. I was a nineteen and a half year old Army Infantry officer. The greatest job in the world was commanding a rifle platoon. We operated out of LZ Liz in Quang Ngai Province and up into Quang Tin Province. This was Southern I Corps and a very, very nasty place. I was terribly wounded in June of '68 and spent the ensuing eighteen months getting pieced back together at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C. I was retired at the ripe, old age of twenty-three due to my wounds. I then went to college, graduate school and law school. I have been a career prosecutor for twenty years. I have been married to an extraordinary woman for thirty years. We have been blessed with four above average children: a daughter (20 and a junior at UCLA) and three sons: 15, 12 & 6. We live on a small farm in Northern california. The Good Lord has been more than generous to me. I am humbled and thankful every day. Many of my brothers died in The Jungle; some in my arms. Their courage, love and sacrifice stuns me to this day. Were we that young once and did we walk on the edge of a razor blade for so long? We saw the Darkest Dark and the Brightest Bright of the human condition in The Jungle. We only had each other in The Jungle and we were so far from God. No one should ever have to be that far away. I carry my fallen brothers in my heart. It is where they belong and where they are closest to me. He is not heavy because he is my brother. They sleep the sleep granted to those who placed love above fear. There was no oxygen in The Jungle. We breathed Death. It was our constant companion. Never, never again must our precious youth be sacrificed for half-hearted political folly. Sleep gently, my dear brothers and know that I love you. I will speak of you and I will honor you. "I have beheld the agonies of War through many a weary season; seen enough to make me hold that scarcely any goal is worth the reaching by so red a road." A Soldier's Prayer: "Lord, only you know what I must face today. If I forget about you, please do not forget about me." God Bless: Charlie Three Zero Out.

STUDENT to SOLDIER
. . Contributed By RAY OLIVER On Tuesday, July 02, 2002
For us you fought valiantly, with a dedication, an effort and a passion that far surpassed my dedication & effort to see you home again. The price we paid in the '69 streets of Chicago, NY & even Emporia pales in the young soldier's face who paid with his life. From student to soldier: we are forever indebted to your true courage & sacrifice. Know that you are our true heroes. God has blessed each of you; the living & those whose faces we never saw on the home streets again. Both our hearts hurt 33 years later. Thank you for your sacrifice & the love which you proved for America & me. Liberty & Independence Day is your day & we early students stand by to honor you & salute you for the gift which you gave to country and me. God Bless you.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US!
. . Contributed By Chaplain Howard Flexer On Wednesday, July 03, 2002
This is one birthday that we can all be proud of. We don't have to keep our age to ourselves. Every time we have been attacked or placed in harms way. My fellow Veterans have stood together and were willing to give all and many have given all. Those here to celebrate this birthday. I SAY WE CAN NOT THANK YOU ENOUGH. Those who have given All. YOU ARE IN MY PRAYERS NOW TILL WE MEET AGAIN. GOD BLESS THE USA! As I look at how great our land is and all we have I know in my heart that we have to be UNDER GOD for only under God could we look this good! With God, Then&Now Chaplain Howard Flexer

I was in the Army during Vietnam 1970 - 1973 but didn't get sent to Vietnam. My brother, Michael W. Thomas was in Long Binh at the time and extended his duty 13 additional months to keep me from being sent there. I am grateful to Michael, Robert Dale Kavich my best friend who was KIA in Binh Dinh, and the thousands of heroes who sacrificed their lives, mental and physical well-being for our freedom. God Bless America!

. . Contributed By D.S. Pullar On Saturday, July 06, 2002
My dad was a wonderful man that was taken from me too damn early! Vietnam killed him even though he died in June of 2000. It killed him just the same and I want him back.I am angry and I am hurt. Now, I am paying the price for Vietnam and Agent Orange and I wasn't even alive then. Agent Orange is going to kill me just like it killed my dad.I miss and love him so much.He will always be my hero.
