Daybreak in Vietnam August 16, 1965 . . Contributed By Chaplain Howard Flexer On Friday, August 16, 2002 We had landed the night before just like in the movies. Lock & loaded an 18 year old MARINE who thought he was John Wayne. Not much fun trying to dig a foxhole in the Chu Lai sand. Anyway today marks 37 years since then. So the next few days I'm sure I'll be reliving my first Combat on Operation Starlight. We never even had a home base before we were back on an LSD down the coast to hit the beach again. 37 years sounds like a long time, yet in ones mind I can still feel the fear. We went ashore by Amtrak (floating coffins) it was 05:30. From then on it was pure Hell. Now that I think of it till I boarded that C-124 in Danang and what felt like forever. Well back to reality. I'm here to talk about it when so many of my fellow MARINES are not. So I am thankful to my fellow Marines who kept me alive as I did my best to do the same for them. And most of all God who looked after me. I hope I have not let Him or them down. Semper Fi, With God, Then&Now Chaplain Howard Flexer |

looking for my dad . . Contributed By Lisa Prince Jansen On Friday, August 16, 2002 I am looking for my father who served in Vietnam. My mother passed away several years ago so I have no information on him. The little that I have may be enough to find him. His name is Frederick Prince. He is African American, very light with green eyes. My mother was Irish. And he may have adopted a baby from Germany. Any information would be so very helpful. Thank you. |
