Christmas gifts to our Veterans in hospitals . . Contributed By Chaplain Howard Flexer On Sunday, December 21, 2003 Mission Completed Today I got to Rocky Hill Veterans Hospital. A nice lady that runs the veterans outside help met me. She had a big cart to unload my car. As I got inside a group that had already heard of my arrival met me. My friend who lives there said Hi and told me he knew I would make it as I do every year. The radios and socks went fast as did some candy. I set up in the rec-room as my wife and I enjoyed handing out everything and what was left was given out as prizes at a special bingo. I said hi to old veterans and hug them and wished them a happy and warm Christmas. It was great to see a great many of their faces from last year. I said a prayer before we started Bingo. I was on my own this year because of last week's snowstorm that prevented me from making their Christmas Party. God bless all of them they were not forgotten by my wife & I and also all of you who were there in spirit with me. Mission Completed! I just had to fill one last request. As I went to sleep last night I kept thinking of the Veteran in a wheel chair who missed getting a radio. He wanted one to have when he rode around the place and outside on the grounds. So when I arose I went and purchased a small Radio/cassette and new batteries for it. Then my wife & I went back down there and found him sitting on his bed. I gave him the gift and he smiled at me in wonder, why I would go all that way just for him. He tried to pay me for it and of cause I said no way it was a gift from a fellow Veteran. I hugged him and said Merry Christmas enjoy the radio. I'm sure I felt as good as he did. I just could not forget him and his Christmas wish. God Bless all our Veterans everywhere from every time. Searching for the Newton family . . Contributed By Lisa Newton On Tuesday, December 23, 2003 I would like to get in contact with any family memeber of Charles Newton from Canadian, Texas. This past summer (2003) we took our family to Washington and we visited the Wall. The experience was very moving but also hard to explain to our young children-but we tried. We knew no one personally on the wall but were moved just the same. My daughters ages 3, 6, and 8 asked what the people were doing by rubbing on the paper and we told them they were rubbing the name of someone they had known. My girls said they wished they had a name to look for and thank and make a rubbing of. I told them we should see if there was a person with our last name (Newton) and from our state(Texas), we found Charles Newton and we sat and thanked him and rubbed his name. I have pictures of them doing this and just wanted to share them with his family. My children were deeply touched by the whole experience and by the sacrafice this man made for our country and I just wanted to share that with his family.
