The statue . . Contributed By Harold I. Bell On Tuesday, February 24, 2004 Next time you are at the Memorial take a look at the M-16 rifle held by the GI on the right, as you face the statue. Examine the fire selector switch - it is located on the left side of the receiver. As we all know well, it controls the rifle's rate of fire and has three positionsāsafe, semi-automatic and fully automatic. A right-handed soldier will flick this switch with his thumb. Then turn to a nearby vet, one familiar with the M-16, and ask him which position the switch is inā. |
