Phony Vets . . Contributed By Leslie On Friday, April 13, 2001 Has anyone dealt with the problem of men claiming to be Vietnam Veterans who are not? There is an excellent book on the subject: Stolen Valor (see StolenValor.com). I have been a "victim" of this kind of scam and it sullies the name of those who served honorably in this and other wars.
Phonies and Wannabes . . Contributed By Jim Rocha On Saturday, April 14, 2001 eslie, Thanks for pointing out the ongoing problem in the U.S. regarding military phonies and Vietnam vet "wannabes." Many of these phonies who claim to be Vietnam Vets are the very same cowards who had draft deferments or simply did not serve in the military during the Vietnam War. Many of these folks go above and beyond this basic dishonesty by claiming service as Special Forces team members, SEALS, and other elite groups. Still, the worst of the bunch seek recognition as "heroes" with doctored DD-214s that show numerous awards for valor, including the Medal of Honor. This is about as disgusting as it gets, with slimeballs masquerading as heroes. They attempt to march in step with those whose selfless acts displayed the highest valor, love, and commitment to their friends and comrades. Thankfully, many veterans groups have made it their mission to root out and expose these liars, cheats, and wannabe Audie Murphys. To all of you out there keep it together at all times. Don't accept too much at face value lest you or your loved ones become duped by one of the above-mentioned scum. And to this scum I say why don't you crawl back in the same holes you hid out in during the war. Jim Rocha, Viet '66 and '68.
