. . Contributed By Jim Rocha On Thursday, July 19, 2001
Jimmy Sansone went missing/presumed dead on 09/10/72 off the coast of North Vietnam. I believe he was serving aboart the cruiser USS Newport News. His sister still mourns his loss and is seeking any former crew members who were aboard the "News" when Jimmy was lost, or that knew him while he was serving in the Navy. If any of you are out there, please help Jimmy's sister out. She'd very much like to speak with you. Please contact Jim Rocha (USN, Vietnam '66, '68) at jrocha@lanl.gov or 99meso@gateway.net Thank you.

A SOLDIER'S THOUGHTS
. . Contributed By SFC CHERYL MCELROY On Monday, July 23, 2001
A Soldier's thoughts: We do a thankless job for an often ungrateful country. It is said that a nation's character can be judged by the way it treats its veterans and its military. If election of Clinton and his cohorts was a measure of that character, this country is in deep trouble. It reflects a country that has lost its moral and ethical compass. The one my Aunt, Grandfather, Uncles, and Father served no longer exists. My country wants short, sweet, bloodless conflicts summarized in CNN sound bites. They don't understand that war is not glamorous. War is not bloodless or squeaky clean. It means fighting for the principles, convictions, and most importantly, the freedom that everyone should have regardless of where they live. That's important to remember: we go to foreign lands to fight for the oppressed; to help others attain the same freedom that many Americans take for granted. To the myopic media and academic intelligentsia, we are imperialistic and hegemonic. They don't care that the same soldiers they denigrate are the ones who protect their right to do so. They forget that there are many people in the world who suffer under totalitarian regimes, and would love to trade places with the average disgruntled American. I have served as a soldier in peace and war for 25 years. There are times I have been very proud to be an American, and times I have been very disgusted, disillusioned, and angry at the way my country allowed Clinton to commit acts of perjury and treason. My fellow soldiers and I have spent birthdays, Christmases, Thanksgivings, and anniversaries patrolling in hellholes like Bosnia and Kosovo. We fought in Iraq to contain a lunatic who wanted to spread his idea of "reunification". We guard a Demilitarized Zone at the 38th parallel in Korea. We deploy to some of the most god-forsaken places on earth, with the blessing of the host countries that appreciate the purpose of our mission, only to face obscene diatribes from the so-called places of "higher learning" such as Yale, Berkeley, and Oberlin College. I would like to thank and extend a resounding "WELCOME HOME" to all Vietnam Veterans, the WOMEN IN PARTICULAR. Not only did they come home to face another war against a hostile public, but they also endured pejorative labels from their male counterparts which categorized them as "whores" or "just looking for a husband". Lt. Sharon Lane was a female soldier from my home state of Ohio to give her life on Vietnamese soil. She was killed during an artillery attack on her medical unit in Chu Lai 08 June 1969. Remember all those who made the sacrifice to keep America the "land of the free". Duty, Honor, Country SFC Cheryl McElroy United States Army
