LANCE PETER SIJAN

Betty Brown
I only know Lance through the book that was written about him. The title is either Out of the Mouth of the Cat or Into the Mouth of the Cat. I used it for many years in my classroom whenever we talked about heroes and the Vietnam War. My students were always amazed by the actions of Lance after he was shot down and after his capture. He is not forgotten.

An amazing story of an amazing hero. God bless the family and all who knew Lance. His dedication, perseverance, and patriotism will never be forgotten, and surely Heaven rewarded. "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13

As of today, June 2001, Lance Peter Sijan is the only U.S. Air Force Academy graduate to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. If you are interested in Sijan information and viewing some of the uniforms and other information about Lance Sijan, please visit the United States Air Force Academy. One of the dorms has been named Sijan Hall in his honor.

MAN OF HONOR - U.S. HERO
I HAVE ALSO READ "INTO THE MOUTH OF THE CAT." I FOUND OUT ABOUT THE BOOK, AFTER BEING TOLD ABOUT IT, FROM THE SON OF COL. JOHN W. ARMSTRONG. COL.ARMSTRONG WAS WITH CAPT. SIJAN WHEN THEIR F-4 WAS SHOT. NO ONE KNOWS FOR SURE WHAT HAPPENED TO COL. ARMSTONG, BUT THROUGH THE BOOK, WE KNOW THE HORRIBLE TREATMENT CAPT. SIJAN ENDURED WHILE SERVING OUR COUNTRY IN A FIGHT FOR FREEDOM. WHEN I LOOK AT MY MIA-POW BRACELET WITH COL. ARMSTONG'S NAME AND I FLY THE U.S. AND MIA-POW FLAG IN HIS HONOR, I ALSO REMEMBER THE SACRIFICE OF CAPT. SIJAN. I HOPE THE BOOK WILL BE PASSED FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION, SO OUR CHILDREN WILL ALWAYS KNOW THAT THE FREEDOM WE ENJOY EACH DAY, WAS GIVEN TO US BY THE SACRIFICE OF HERO'S LIKE COL. ARMSTRONG AND CAPT. SIJAN. WE LOVE YOU BOTH AND THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DID.

A Great Inspiration
I started reading "Into the Mouth of the Cat" on break during my tour in the Air Force while at work. One day,I noticed I was reading the same pages again only to find that there were 2 book marks in my book. Before I was done, there were over 6. Everyone in my unit read it & we made it manditory for all the new guys to read it as they came in. If it wasn't for previous family planning, I would have reenlisted due to the inspiration I recieved from his courage. Captain Sijan was truly a patriot & deserves to be honored as such!

Lance is remembered evry day
I have a friend in Kansas City who helped Lance get into flight school. Lance had a finger poked in his eye while a high school football athlete, and through determination he did not let that stand in his way. My friend feels responsible and misses Lance. Lance overcame many things to become a pilot. His perseverance continued even as a POW. Lance never gave up.

I am a 1978 graduate of the US Air Force Academy. I was present when the dormitory, which until that time was referred to only as "The New Dorm", was named in honor of Lance Sijan. His picture hangs in one of the halls near a stairwell. Although I lived in the other dorm for most of my time at the Academy, when I was in Sijan Hall, and I passed Lance Sijan's picture, I always saluted him! I felt it was only fitting that I salute a hero such as he was. This country needs more people like Lance Sijan!
