BRUNO ARTHUR HOCHMUTH

Scott Critz
Commanding General MCRD San Diego
5 Chung St.
Nashua, NH 03062 USA
General Hochmuth was Commanding General of MCRD San Diego when I went through boot camp in December 1965 with Platoon 3036. Although I never met him, I was saddened to hear of his untimely death. Coincidentally, we were both in country at the same time.

I was a 1st Lieutenant and served under him at NCRD San Diego in 1964/1965. Was saddened when I saw his name on "The Wall". God speed General.

The General and I both reported for duty with 3d MarDiv, RVN on the same day. I worked as his Division Food Service Officer and flew with him frequently throughout the Division Area for eight months before his death. Hard as steel when need be, I knew him as a warrior without equal and a Marine of great compassion and commitment to his Marines. I grew to respect and admire him greatly. On the Division Menu for the 192D Anniversary of the Corps he wrote: "As we commemorate the founding of our Corps 192 years ago, we again are fighting for right and fredom in a land far from our shores. Our enemy is a tough and resourceful one, but he is meeting defeat through our skill in battle and in our efforts to rebuild a war-torn nation. As we seek our inspiration from past campaigns, we are adding new chapters to Marine Corps history to serve as guides for future Marines. As we celebrate this 192nd anniversary of our Corps' beginning, let us rededicate ourselves to Corps And Country. Happy Birthday. B.A Hochmuth, Major General, U.S.Marine Corps " He died as he lived his life, committed to Corps and Country. May he rest in peace.

The image with this message was taken from the recruit album for Platoon 310, Marine Recruit Depot, San Diego 4-29-65. At the time Major General Hochmuth was the Commanding General of Recruit Depot. From what I have read about the General he was an outstanding officer. Semper Fi.

General Hochmuth was Commanding General, MCRD San Diego when I arrived at boot camp (Platoon 233) in April 27, 1964. The General was still CG when I was with the MCRD Band until he went to Vietnam. General Hochmuth would always take the time to stop and chat with any of the band members. I spoke with him frequently. He treated us with mutual respect always. He was proud of the band, and complimented our performance frequently. I knew him as a kind, decent human being, and a fine leader. I read of his death in the paper shortly after it happened. It was a very sad moment for me. Semper Fidelis, Sir. Well done! Jack R. Cook, Sgt. USMC 1964-1970

Remembrance
I served under General Hochmuth as a recruit in Third Battalion, Platoon 330 from 1 January 1966 to 30 March, 1966. I also served under him with 3rd MarDiv, 5th Comm. Battalion in RVN from March, 1967 to August 1967 when my tour was completed. I met him at III MAF Headquarters in Da Nang. It has been 37 years and I still have not forgotten his service to our country and I'm grateful for his sacrifice and offer my prayers to his family. His was an honorable life and deserves remembrance by all Americans.
