Bob What You Mean To ME

I remember going up the stairs at my folk's house when my mother told me you had been killed. I stopped with my foot in the air and couldn't talk. It felt like someone put a knife in my heart. I think of you constantly since that day. You have taught me the importance of sticking with what you are suppose to do. You have taught me the heartache of giving it all. I am proud of you but my heart breaks. You stood for something I didn't understand at the time. Your memory has taught me so much about life since you are gone. I wish we could have been closer when we had the time but it didn't work out that way. You are in my heart always. How can I say what giving your life has meant to me? There are no words for such a thing. Don't think that your life was so short for nothing because it has meant something to me and has guided my life in so many areas

Thinking of you Lt Bob Byrnes
I remember the last time I spoke with Bob. You could tell that Bob was very proud to be in the Army and a fine young officer . He was good natured and as we parted I shook his hand and said be careful, and as we parted, Bob had a big smile on his face.Little did I know it would be the last time I would see him. Every time I visit the wall I go to the panel where his name is and I am sad , and hope he didn't suffer. Bob, I will always remember you, especially the smile on your face, the last time we were together.Rest in peace.

I have never seen your face or heard your name, but I know you. I know what you have seen, what you have done for this great nation. I see it in my fathers' eyes each day. I hope you know how much you are thought of this day and everyday. My father instilled in me the art of remembrance, and it's importance. but your spirit lives on in my heart, now and always. I will not forget. Daughter of Charles R McLeaster, 196 th 1967/1968, Vietnam Veteran. Made it home in '68 with the lasting impression that lives on him today. Lt Bob Byrnes we will not forget you

While searching through genealogy in The Byrnes name. I came across Bob Byrnes in Classmates.com. Saddened by what I saw I wrote to his website, and came upon his brother. I shared with him my sorrow, and the irony of losing a member in our Byrnes family here in Massachusetts. He was my cousin James P. Hickey. Son Of Carol R. (Byrnes) Hickey.
K.I A. 5/27/69. The very same name as Bob's brother.
Two brave soldiers, sharing the same name & perhaps the same heritage.
I leave these words with you. Hope they bring some comfort.
Written for my cousin on the day we bid good-by to him. It reflects the thoughts of all who still feel the loss throughout these many years.
To all of our brave soldiers
All Give Some, Some Give All, And Some Give More Than Most
Welcome Home Brave soldier.

The Magic Horse
Written By Philip G.Byrnes,
Uncle to James P. Hickey
This Poem was written by Jim's Uncle Philip G. Byrnes On the day before Jim was buried.
It was recited from the Pulpit on the day of his Burial.
As a family we are very proud of these heartfelt words.
They express the Love, sorrow and pain we all felt on that very sad day 39 years ago.

The Magic Horse
When he was just a boy He had a magic horse
No on else could see,
But it was there, of course.
He'd gallop off at night
And tie it to his bed,
He knew it would stand guard
So nothing he must dread.
Years have ways of passing
And so do Childhood dreams
As boys to manhoodgrow overnight it seems Leaving those he loves the most
Leaving his magic horse
Now he goes to search out From life, its very force. He must be a Marine.
Though it may bring him harm
Fate will cross his path In the Province of Quang Nam. Now speaks a gentle voice
"Jim, we mustn't tarry For I have come this night to take you home to Mary."
"But Father I am so young I do not understand."
"He knows, He knows, my son.
He bade me take your hand.
He took me to you know.
And I cried out in pain.
To ask my Father why By men I must be slain.
He sacrificed His son that men might learn to care,
He led me to my home, And I must take you there.
He will not let you hurt As I did from the cross
Dear Jim, I'll lead you home Upon your Magic horse.

Karen: If your anything like I am, even after 39 years, your crying your eyes out right now.
I would love it if Uncle Phil to have this published, to honor the Man who wrote it , and the Man it was written for. It was written in 1969,
Christine (Hickey) Silcox,
Only surviving sister to James Philip Hickey
In Honor of her Brother from a Loving Uncle
God Bless,and Keep you Bob.
