Bob Byrnes, was my friend. We grew up together and spent our years, together, in Carmichael, Ca.. We were young together and were pals, until the end. Bob was a good friend, to me and we seemed, to mutually share each family. I'll never forget, that closeness. He was well loved, in our family. Bob came from a good, solid, working class family. To know Bob, was to know, you could trust him. But I remember, from the earliest times, Bob was in love with the idea, of being a soldier. Some boys wanted to be cowboys, but not Bob. I've had some heartaches, but Bob's death in Nam, was just about the worst thing, that has ever happened to me. I was in San Diego, just after my training at Mare Island, near 'Frisco and about ready to ship out, for my first trip to Nam with the Naval River, Squadron, Amphibious Forces. We were hoping to meet, there somehow. I went downtown to Diego and called, my soon to be "X" fiance and I'll never forget her words of, "...did you hear about Bob, he is MIA., people are every where on our street, the neighborhood pulling for Bob?..." A few weeks later, in Nam, I got my last letter to him back, marked, "Verified Deceased," from my mom. It was true, it hit the local news paper, he just got married two, weeks early, his mom and dad and younger brother and new bride, just got from Bob's wedding on his r and r, I was so lost for words. Bob was a bright, energetic, man full of life. He was a proud soldier. I'am sure his light shines brightly, in heaven. His bright eyes, quick wit, and infectious smile, will alway be a part of me. He too made the ultimate sacrifice, for this country. Many people today, will never know how serious our sacrifices were, for our Country. ...days are long, since you went, away... my buddy... your buddy, misses you...

Bob Byrnes, was my eldest brother friend, I remember him well, as a fun, gernerous, giving individual. He was always ready, to help his younger brother and his friends. Bob was, as we saw him in the 60's a 'cool' person, loved by many. He always will be held, in the hearts of those, who love him.

I owe much, to Bob
Over the years
Over the years, when I have shared, my Viet Nam, experiences, with my high School students, I have always included thoughts, of Lt., Robert Scott Byrnes, from Carmichael, Ca.. The story I tell them, is of a person, who was much to smart, much to prepared, to lose his life, but willing, to sacrifice it, to save another. I talk of a hero, my hero, the person who saved, my life. This is the Robert Scott Byrnes, I knew well. We went, through both basic and advanced, infantry training, together. We all knew, he would go, to OCS., Just Knowing him, being with him, being a part, of his own efforts, to survive the war, is what helped me, to save my life. No question, about it. He gave me the energy, the skills and the will to survive, when I was, at my angriest, at my most depressed state, of mind. He helped me to see, that my key to survival, was tied to my skills, as a soldier as well, as my mindset. What mattered most was, that I accept, my situation and that, I do something positive, about it. I did and I survived. I owe much to Bob, much more than, these few words. I want all of you, who read this to know, that the world lost, an incredible person, when it lost, 1Lt., Robert Scott Byrnes. (Bob) He was destined, to be one, of the primary movers and shakers, of our generation. Sad, how incredibly sad, to his family. I send these words, "1lt., Robert S Byrnes, is not forgotten and still, very much loved." God Bless you, Bob and your memory.

Lt., Robert Scott Byrnes
Carmichael, Ca., 95608, USA
I heard they called you, Scottie
heard, they called you, "Scottie" and from the concern shown, by many of us, you're in for having, the credit finally shown, that is due, all you heroes, of Feb., 9, 68. You and the rest, of your brothers, that died that fateful day, had no lack, of courage and fortitude. You all are now, a part of the history, that we, that are left breathing, can never let, this world ever, ever forget. I only knew one, of you, a short time ago, but now, I know all, of you and you, have become part, of me personally. I'am constantly reminded, of my short comings, when I concentrate, on the loss of life, that very bad day, so many years ago. Each day, it seems the puzzle, of that day comes together, a day of heroes, selflessness, answering, that dreaded call, on the battlefield, a day of dying, for GOD and country, a day, when young men left, this world and entered Heaven, to see the Saviors face and hear "job well done." You all have friends and family, that you left, behind and they can never forget, the last day, they saw you and the others, the warriors! Robert "Scottie" Byrnes. I never knew you, but I wish, I had. Bob Howland
