Jack Sullivan
served, with Lt., Bob Byrnes
Long Beach, NY., 11561, USA
He was the guy, I wanted, to be.
Jack Sullivan, sullivan@optonline.net served, with Lt., Bob Byrnes, He was the guy, I wanted to be. As a 19, year old, sp/4, serving, with Lt., Byrnes, he was the person, I someday wanted, to be. The news of his death, felt like a building, fell, on me. I took a long walk, in the woods by myself and could not hold back, the tears. I regret not going, with Lt., Byrnes and He was not, my Lt., but I wish he was, we all thought, he was the best officer. I wish, he was our commander. Often, when I have needed, that little extra push, to do something, I have thought, of Lt., Byrnes and how, he was cheated, in life. It seemed my obligation, to do it, in his name. In the Late 80s, I actually spoke, to his mother and father, by phone. They were, very good to me, they invited me, to the Califorian Memorial, for the state, I could stay, at their house. I may have pulled, a little more hurt, from their souls, but I just needed, to tell them, that even years later, there are people who think, of their son and miss his spirit.

Thanks Scottie, for those combat boots, you gave me. You broke them in, for me, so I didn't have to wear, those lousy black things, on my first patrols. You took time, to teach me how, to be a good, 'tail end charlie.' I lost my first friend, to quickly. I still have that braid, you made, from your boot strap. It's hanging on my lamp, on my desk. It did bring, me, good luck, as I carried it, in my pack, on all my patrols. I got home and got, to have a family. Thanks, for my life, you saw that trip wire and kept me, from death. Wish, I could have done more, for you. See ya, Dave

Why are the best, taken frist
Bob was the first guy, I'd ever met who read the New York Times, every day. He was bright - - one of the brightest, in our class - - and he was a lot of fun, the kind of guy we all expected, to have a very successful life. I was stationed at Cherry Point, Marine, Air Station, in North Carolina, when I heard of Bobs' death. My thought at the time, was and still is, something John F. Kennedy once asked, "Why are the best taken first?"

Chuck Sawyer
Erie, PA., USA
My name is Chuck Sawyer. I now reside in Erie, PA., Bob and I were classmates at Our Lady Assupation, in Carmichael, Califorina. We also attended La Sierra, High School, Carmichael, Califorina, together where after our first year at La Sierra, High School did not return to school, the following year we moved. I didn't hear from him, or see him until reading about his death, in the morning paper just two weeks, before I was drafted into the army. Even though I survived that era, I never forgot my friend, but his last name escaped, my memory until now. I prayed for his family, fourty, years ago and again today. I thank God, I had the chance, to know him. He was a good man. I'm glad I finally, found him again. R.I.P., Bob. Chuck Sawyer
